DeKalb County Police said about a dozen ATV’s and dirt bikes escaped from officers Sunday as they tried to pull them over at a shopping center parking lot on Moreland and Custer Avenues.

DeKalb County Police tell FOX Five’s Nathalie Pozo that they received three calls about the bikes that are illegal to drive on city streets.  When officers arrived the riders began to disburse and police said when the officers realized they were not going to stop they did not continue to chase them since the risk to the riders and public did not warrant the pursuit for misdemeanor traffic charges.

From witness video you can see you the riders taking off onto Moreland Ave.  Some rode onto the sidewalk, another driving against traffic.  One rider can be seen cutting in front of a vehicle.

DeKalb County Police said they will be looking into different ways to address these issues and communicating with Atlanta Police who have experienced similar incidents including riders running red lights, weaving in and out of traffic and even driving on the wrong side of the road.

In June FOX Five aired video of two men stomping on and damaging an Atlanta patrol car and its windshield before hopping back on their ATV’s. Investigators said the officer driving that car was injured in a foot chase with one of the riders.  Atlanta Police said no arrests have been made in this particular case, but do say they have made several arrests and impounded numerous ATV’s.
