Atlanta-based director talks about 'Buddy'

Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken sat down with the Atlanta-based director of the horror movie titled "Buddy" to talk about the inspirations for the movie.

He’s the big orange unicorn that’s been charming children for decades. But Buddy isn’t happy. And when Buddy isn’t happy … you better watch your back!

Casper Kelly’s Sundance horror hit "Buddy" opens in theaters nationwide next Friday, Aug. 28, from Roadside Attractions and Saban Films. The film stars Emmy Award winner Cristin Milioti ("The Penguin"), Delaney Quinn, Topher Grace and Keegan-Michael Key as the voice of the title character. It centers on a popular children’s television character … possibly inspired by a certain purple dinosaur!

"I grew up watching those with my kids, and also ‘Dora the Explorer’ and ‘Blue's Clues’ and all those things," says Kelly. "So, to just do horrible things in that world, got more and more interesting for me!"

Writer-director Kelly is based here in Atlanta and is known for previous work including "Adult Swim Yule Log," "Adult Swim Yule Log 2: Branchin' Out" and the Emmy-nominated TV hit "Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell."

Kelly recently stopped by the FOX 5 Atlanta studios to talk about the film — click the video player in this article to check it out! The director will also appear at Atlanta's iconic Plaza Theatre next Friday, Aug. 28, for a Q&A following the 7:30 p.m. screening. Click here for a link to tickets.
