ATLANTA, Ga. - An APS mom refuses to let her son return to school after his jaw was wired shut following a bullying incident.
Mom Nicole Menzies hates watching cell phone video on Instagram or Worldstar Hip Hop. Her 15-year-old son, in all black, gets pummeled by a Mays High classmate after he got off a school bus last week.
" It pains me and it hurts me to know that my son gets bullied just going to school and doing what he is suppose to do ," Nicole Menzies said.
The beating was so severe, Montavius' Barnes Jr. had to get his mouth wired shut for six long weeks.
He takes 5 medications, 3 times a day and is forced to eat through a straw.
"His jaw is fractured in three places, on the side and in the front. So it is wired and it is screwed. He has four screws at the top, and four screws at the bottom, on each side," Montavius' mom said.
The 9th grade honor roll student, who his mother says is quiet and withdrawn, had trouble talking to us.
" He was hitting me when I was in the road. Reporter: Show me where he hit you? Here and other side," Montavius Barnes mumbled to us through his wired shut mouth.
Montavius' mom wants a homebound teacher for her son, but she says Atlanta Public schools has ordered him back to the classroom.
"The video is all over social media and his mouth is wired shut. I can't imagine sending my son to school for people to be picking at him and laughing at him, and he can't even talk to defend himself, " Menzies said.
A spokeswoman for Atlanta Public Schools told us the district was just learning about the incident and planned to accommodate the mother with her requests.
