UNION CITY, Ga. - Fire hidden in the walls of an apartment building in Union City left nine families without a place to stay.
A resident in one of the Shannon Lakes Apartments smelled smoke and called for help late Monday night. Smoke detectors had most of the neighbors in the affected building running to safety.
Firefighters arrived to see the smoke, but couldn't find the flames at first. They found the danger within a wall between two units. They called the location "tricky:"
"The location of the flames wasn't evident at first. This was a stubborn fire to fight, but no one was hurt," explained Lt. Dennis Moore with the Union City Fire Department.
The Red Cross is helping the 30 people displaced with temporary shelter. Residents will be able to recover their valuables later Tuesday.
Fire investigators will begin their work figuring out the cause.
