ATLANTA - Early next month, several airport concessions in the atrium will shutdown so construction can get started to expand the security checkpoint.
A spokesperson says the overhaul, which will take about a year to complete, will mean 3,500 travelers can be in the queue lines instead of spilling over into the atrium at peak times.
Disorganized long lines have plagued the generally smooth running airport, adding to stress on staff and travelers.
The revamped holding area will also be a benefit to the security staff, says the spokesperson, because all those who are supposed to board a jet will be in a designated area before getting to the screener.
As part of the expansion, the airport will add new technology that can give travelers accurate wait times.
Passengers carrying a cell phone will provide staff with a ping that can track the steps of the passenger right through the line.
