6-year-old child dies in Atlanta apartment fire

A 6-year-old girl died in a fatal apartment fire in northeast Atlanta on Sunday.

The Atlanta Fire Department said they responded to the call at 415 Boulevard NE just before 1 p.m.

Fire officials told FOX 5 that neighbors tried to rescue the little girl, but couldn't get inside.

Once crews arrived on scene, they searched the apartment and found the girl with severe burns.

She was taken to Grady Hospital's burn unit where she later died.

Fire officials later identified the young girl as Imani Islam, a student at Whitefoord Elementary School.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
