ATLANTA - One teenager is dead and another is in the hospital after a shootout in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in northwest Atlanta. Police are trying to figure out what led up to the shooting and how many people were involved.
It happened outside the Wendy's on Hamilton E Holmes near Martin Luther King Drive. It was just after 3 p.m. Wednesday. The restaurant was filled with customers and employees when bullets started flying.
Investigators said a red Lexus and a black Toyota pulled up side by side. Police said the people in the cars opened fire on each other. A 15-year old boy was shot. The others in the car pushed him out of the vehicle and took off. Medics found him in the parking lot and rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The red Lexus was found at an apartment complex on Fairburn Road about two miles away. Those inside bailed out and took off running. Inside the car, investigators found another teen who had been shot. He was rushed to the hospital.
Investigators are still looking for the black Toyota. Witnesses told police it is a Scion or Cube. They're not sure how many people were in the vehicle.
One woman who lives nearby named Khadijah says she's not going to let her guard down until everyone involved is caught.
“It worries me because I have young nieces and nephews, it's really frightening,” said Khadijah.
She also says she's said another young life was lost to gun violence.
“It's sad we're losing our young people, it hurts to see our young people go like that,” said Khadijah.
