KENNESAW, Ga. - For such tiny animals, hummingbirds attract a huge amount of attention. But we still have a lot to learn about these fascinating creatures, and that’s where a local woman known as “The Hummingbird Whisperer” comes in.
Kennesaw’s Smith-Gilbert Gardens will host its 8th annual Hummingbird Banding Event on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., giving guests a unique look at how researchers collect data about these fascinating animals. The event will feature Julia Elliott (also known as The Hummingbird Whisperer), one of less than 200 people in North America with a federal permit to band hummingbirds.
Once Elliott has banded a hummingbird, she’s able to collect important research information about it including migratory patterns, plumage characteristics, age, sex, and more.
Smith-Gilbert Gardens is located at 2382 Pine Mountain Road in Kennesaw. Tickets cost $7 in advance and $10 the day of the event, with discounts for children, seniors, and military personnel.
