FAYETTVILLE, Ga. - Fayetteville Police are trying to identify two women seen on a store’s security camera. It’s bad enough, they are accused of stealing a store clerk’s wallet. But police said the surveillance video showed they did it in front of two small children. In fact, one little girl might have helped in the crime by acting as a lookout.
“It’s not unusual,” said Lt. Mike Whitlow of the Fayetteville Police Department. “We’ve seen it before, especially in shoplifting cases.”
It happened at College Collectables on the square in downtown Fayetteville. Karen Bennett, the clerk, said one of the women lured her to the back of the store and seemed interested in religious collectibles. Meantime, the second woman sneaked behind the counter and stole Karen’s wallet from her purse. The woman stuffed it into her stretch pants.
Police said the whole time a child was looking out for Bennett’s return.
“Their use of children was pretty disgraceful. They are teaching their children that it’s OK and teaching them how to do it,” Karen Bennett said.
Police said security cameras showed one of the women using Bennett’s credit card at a Walmart in Griffin.
Police said the children are not in trouble with the law because of their age. However, if they had been adults they might have faced charges.
Call the Fayetteville Police Department if you can help identify the women.
