ATHENS, Ga. - A claim that a man tried to kidnap and sexually assault a University of Georgia student turned out not to be the whole truth.
Tuesday, UGA issued an alert to students, warning students and staff of a possible sexual predator, after they received a report that a young woman was attacked outside the high rise dorms on Baxter Street. The alert said a man tried to kidnap and rape the student. But that tip that sparked the alert never came from the victim, but instead a residence hall director.
The university issued a statement Wednesday with what they learned really happened. Police finally tracked down the victim and found much of that report was false. The victim told police she was walking home when an unknown man walked up behind her and placed his hands over her eyes. She turned around in an aggressive manner and the man ran off. The victim told police the man didn't hurt her or even talk to her.
Police said even though they do not feel there is a current threat to the community, they said students still need to be safe and develop personal safety strategies
