ATLANTA - A number of people in Coweta County and Fairburn spent Thursday morning cleaning up damage done by a powerful storm system that swept through the area Wednesday evening.
The storm generated heavy downpours, gusty winds, and at least one tornado. The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down in Coweta County.
There was significant damage there as well as in Fairburn.
Confirmed Tornadoes
The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado is responsible for shredding trees, ripping off rooftops and tossing debris across several neighborhoods in Fairburn and Palmetto just before 5 p.m. November 18.
Many families were home when the storm, packing 105 mile an hour winds, swept through South Fulton County and nearby Coweta County. No one was injured, but homeowners spent the day dealing with insurance adjusters and home construction contractors as the lengthy and costly clean up gets underway.
Palmetto homeowner Jorge Rubio told FOX 5 his young children were in the second story playroom of his home on George Wynn Road moments before the house started shaking and the ceiling caved in--exposing a 15 foot hole in the roof.
"My neighbor's window and roof panels are inside my attic. They just broke through like projectiles. But I'm just grateful all the people in this community were okay. We all even sent our kids to school so it would feel like a regular day while we all cleaned up," Rubio told FOX 5's Portia Bruner.
Fairburn Damage
On Hearth Way in Fairburn, a big tree fell through the family room at the home of Joy Thompson. She told FOX 5 News the family had moved back in after the house caught fire in 2014.
At the Ayala house the family was home, when the big storm passed through, Christina Ayala said the swings in her back yard were lifted from the ground in a spinning manner.
The Thompson and Ayala families told FOX 5 News they'll likely stay with family or friends temporarily until their insurance responds with hotel accommodations.
Mother Nature's fury also knocked out power to the Fairburn area when police say a large limb tumbled onto a transformer. Police say the west side of the city was particularly hard hit with tree limbs down, temporary flooding and numerous car accidents.
Authorities in Fairburn report numerous trees down left many in the city without power during the early evening hours. Tell Road was impassable due for a couple hours as crews worked to clear away fallen trees and power lines. Heavy wind damage was also reported in the area of Rivertown and John Rivers roads.
City officials also reported a house fire on W. Campbellton Street.

Homes Hit Hard in Coweta County
The National Weather Service is still assessing the strength of the tornado that touched down Wednesday afternoon in Coweta County. Several homes were damaged by the high winds. The Newnan Times Herald shared a photo with FOX 5 News of a home with its roof sheared off of it.
Emergency officials in Coweta County confirmed that four homes were damaged during Wednesday's storm. Two of those homes were on George Wynn Road and two more on Lea Way. Several trees around the area also were downed.
Authorities also reported that a tree fell across the road, hitting a car on Highway 16 near Crook Road near Senoia.
No injuries were reported due to the storm.
Paulding County Lightning Strike
Authorities in Paulding County reported around 4:30 p.m. that one person was injured by a lightning strike near Meadow Lark.
A spokesperson with the Paulding County Fire Department reported that a lightning struck a power line and ran into the ground. A man was touching the nearby ground was injured, but not directly struck by the bolt.
Officials said the injuries were minor.
Powerful Storms Move through Metro Atlanta
Rain began moving into the state shortly before 3 p.m. and continued to push east. The storm packed powerful winds, heavy rains and lightning. The heaviest of the storm passed over Atlanta around 5:30 p.m. About an hour later, the powerful storm line moved over the Commerce, Athens and Eatonton areas.
Multiple reports came into the SKYFOX Traffic Center during the evening commute about flooded roadways including several downtown streets.
The storm also scared a portion of Atlanta. Several trees were reported down including one on Gresham Street and another on Dell Avenue.
Georgia Tech reported they measured a 13-inch per hour rate of rainfall as the storm passed, but thankfully, the storm didn't stick around that long.
Highway 166 and Greenbrier Parkways experienced significant flooding according to Atlanta Police. Also, Piedmont Road was flooded at Miami Circle in Atlanta.

A downed tree blocked the intersection of Pinehurst Street at Sycamore Drive in Decatur. Authorities said there were no injuries reported.
Georgia Power said at the height of the storm, about 6,000 people were without power. About a third of those were inside The Perimeter, but other outage ares included Cedartown, Carroll County, East Newnan, Fairburn, Union City, Morrow, McDonough, Norcross, Duluth, Bogart, and Jonesboro.
There were some delays reported at Atlanta's Hartsfield Jackson International Airport at the height of the storm, but operation returned to normal within about an hour.

Several communities north of Atlanta also saw a deluge of rain.
