ATLANTA - With the cold air moving in, residents in one Atlanta apartment complex are doing everything they can to keep warm.
They haven't had heat in the apartments on Verbena Street for weeks, and are now really feeling it as the temperature drops.
"Half the time, I go to sleep with my coat on and my kids sleep with long johns, jumpers, hats and socks because it's cold, it's very cold in here," says Sherrell Brooks.
Brooks is one of the few who has electricity, so she's sharing with her neighbors.
You can see extension cords coming from her apartment into other apartments.
Residents all have to coordinate every switch that is turned on.
"If we turn on the heaters we have to turn off the hot plates, if we turn on the hot plates we have to turn off the heaters," says Shena Carter.
Carter says about every 30 minutes, they trip the breaker and have to go outside to fix it.
They also realize it's dangerous.
Brooks says she had a space heater that caught fire Monday morning.
On December 21st, code enforcement officers from the City of Atlanta were called to the apartments and discovered the gas meters had been stolen from DeKalb County.
The gas company pulled out all the meters, leaving the residents with no gas.
Residents say for two weeks they've tried to get some help from the city. They complained that it wasn't their fault that the meters were stolen, and they needed some help.
Monday evening, the Mayor's Office of Constituent Services told the residents they would meet with them Tuesday and help them try to find alternative housing.
The residents say it's a glimmer of hope.
"I'm happy in a way, but until I see us moving out of here, then I'll be more happy," says Brooks.
