ATLANTA - A man who shot two police officers in Boston Wednesday night has ties to metro Atlanta.
Kirk Figueroa, 33, was no stranger to the law. Boston Police called him a "wannabe" cop. That's because they say he was wearing body armor and was heavily armed. And that he ran a security firm, acted as a bounty hunter, and drove what looked like a patrol car.
Wednesday’s shootout happened around 11 pm in East Boston. Police responded to a 911 call reporting a man threatening his roommate with a knife. When Boston police arrived, officer said the bullets began to fly.
“The gentleman who is doing the shooting, was complaining it's too hot in the house. The other guy said it was too cold in the house, that's what it was over she said. They were screaming and yelling at each other,” said neighbor Bob Ryan.
Two Boston Police officers were shot and are in critical, but stable condition. Figueroa, who police said was heavily armed and wearing police tactical gear, was shot and killed.
“Officers inside, on the ground in a prone position, continue to exchange gunfire. The suspect in question was neutralized and the threat was discontinued,” said Boston Police Commissioner William Evans.
Figueroa was no stranger to the law. He was once a Cobb County resident with an arrest record that included traffic violations and a 2009 charge of 1st degree arson.
Boston Police called Figueroa a “wannabe cop” and said that his vehicle even had police markings.
On his website, Figueroa described himself as a Boston constable, a former member of a U.S. Army Reserve Military Police unit, a bounty hunter, and former corrections officer.
“I see the car, bail bondsman, he was part of a law enforcement agency,” said neighbor Paul Pelosi.
“A wannabe cop car, it had constable written all over it,” said neighbor Steven Buttiglieri.
An acquaintance said Figueroa moved to the Boston area so he could expand his business. He wanted to open up some sort of a security and private investigation company.
“He's almost working like an officer of the state; shooting at other officers seems kind of ridiculous,” said neighbor Guy Moore.
The two Boston officers who were shot are in critical condition, but expected to survive. Nine other officers were treated at a hospital for trauma, stress and minor injuries.
