DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - There is no reason to wait for a threat. In the wake of the terrorist assault on innocents in France, the Atlanta FBI director has called a meeting of area police chiefs to give them a background briefing.
Britt Johnson heads what the federal officials call an enhanced office equipped with multiple SWAT teams, bomb detection capability and other resources he would not divulge in an interview at the FBI office.
Johnson said ISIS must be taken seriously. One challenge for law enforcement is that religion-based attackers are willing to die, even expect to die with a goal of killing as many people as they can.
The mindset is totally different than an everyday criminal, even a ruthless one.
Johnson said he's comfortable the coordination between all levels of law enforcement has been upgraded dramatically since 1996 when Atlanta saw terrorism of the home grown variety during the Olympics -- the bomb that was set and exploded in Centennial Park.
