GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - A Gwinnett County woman and her new husband will leave Friday for the trip of a lifetime.
Jessica and Nate Baumgart quit their jobs and will spend the next year traveling around the world.
"We argue still about whose idea it was first," said Jessica Baumgart. "He thinks it was his."
The couple has been planning the trip for two years. They got married in July and instead of registering for wedding gifts, they asked friends and family to contribute money to their journey.
"Most people are really supportive," said Nate Baumgart.
The Baumgarts researched their likely expenses and saved $75,000 to fund their trip by cutting back on spending and taking on odd jobs. They signed up to host travelers on Airbnb and pets on DogVacay.com. The pair also sold most of their possessions.
"Those little things do add up over a long period of time and the closer you start getting to your goal, the more willing you are to do the things that are important to get you there," explained Nate Baumgart.
Mr. and Mrs. Baumgart will fly out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and spend their first month in Colombia. After that, their plans will take them to other places in South America, Africa, Europe and Asia.
Planning the trip has already forced the newlyweds to closely examine their lifestyle choices.
"I'm just kind of interested to see if it will help us refocus our priorities once we get back," Jessica said.
The couple agreed they will face some challenges both in their relationship and in their travels, but they believe those challenges will make them stronger.
"I really think when we make big changes, we learn different things about ourselves and those are always beneficial regardless of what we do," added Nate.
