DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A Gwinnett County man accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend’s son and going on a violent crime spree in June was indicted Thursday.
Carlester Gilbert, 39, is charged with malice murder, felony murder, armed robbery, four counts of aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
On June 11, officials say Gilbert went to the home of his ex-girlfriend and former boss and got into an argument with son, Rashad Williams. Gilbert reportedly fatally shot Williams in the back of the head, then shot and injured Williams’s younger brother, Detavious Kwakye. Officials say Gilbert also shot at Williams’ older brother and another teen as they fled into the home. Both teens escaped.
Authorities say Gilbert then robbed a nearby Chevron at gun point. According to a press release, officers caught him throwing the gun out of the window of his vehicle.
A high-speed police chase followed, and Gilbert’s truck eventually slammed into a police car, reportedly knocking the cruiser into a civilian’s vehicle. Gilbert was then arrested.
He also is charged in Norcross with armed robbery, false imprisonment, and two counts of aggravated assault for attacking Williams’ mother with a wrench and knife on June 6, and stealing her SUV, purse and cash and allegedly fleeing to Florida.
He is being held without bond in the DeKalb County jail.
