Storms move out of Georgia, Flash Flood Warning remains

ATLANTA (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Parts of metro Atlanta remain under a Flash Flood Warning. The earlier series of tornado warnings expired when strong thunderstorms quickly moved through the region Friday morning.

Flooding has been reported in Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett and surrounding counties.

Earlier in the day, a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes swept through Georgia before barreling into the Carolinas. The system brought dangerous winds and lightning and left a trail of damage in its wake.

Tornado watches and warnings were issued for most of north Georgia throughout the morning before they expired.

As of 3 p.m., Georgia Power reported about 3,000 people without power in metro Atlanta. According to the Georgia EMC, another 20,000 were experiencing outages.

Some showers and thunderstorms will linger into the afternoon and evening, although their severity should be lessened. 

Cooler air will move in behind the system for Friday and Saturday, with sunny skies and warmer temperatures on the way for Easter Sunday.

Make sure you are storm-ready before severe weather hits:

  • Know where the safest room in your house is. It should be the lowest and most interior point in your home with no windows.
  • Keep a pair of clothes to grab in case you need to evacuate to that room overnight
  • Have your shoes by your bed and consider having a helmet to protect your head.
  • Parents, make sure your children are ready tonight as well.
