GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - A person is dead after a vehicle slammed into a restaurant in unincorporated Snellville Thursday afternoon, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Authorities have identified the victim as Harry Gober, 71 from Atlanta. The driver has been identified as Patricia Gregory, 68 from Lawrenceville, according to police.
Police said the accident occurred around 3 p.m. at M&J Homestyle Cooking located at 3050 West Main Street. The Gwinnett County Police Department said a 68-year-old woman pulled into the parking lot with her husband. Police said she apparently mistook the gas for the brake, lurching the BMW SUV forward into the restaurant which had about 20 people inside at the time.
A 71-year-old man inside the restaurant was killed. A second man received minor injuries.
"Sitting there eating and the car crashed through, the wall exploded in, pushed me down, slid up on top of me. I stayed there for a few seconds and then zipped back out, and the table fell over me, and there was another victim that was next to me," said one man who said he was inside when the SUV crashed through. He said he was driving himself to an area hospital
The driver and her husband were transported to an area hospital for evaluation.
Authorities had to evacuate the building until it could be inspected. It was determined the crash did not cause any damage to the structure itself. Workers could be seen taking measurements of the damaged area.
Police would not immediately say if the woman behind the wheel will be charged.
