NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - The trial got underway Tuesday in Newton County for a couple accused of murdering their infant daughter two years ago.
Defendants Courtney Marie Bell and Christopher McNabb are charged in the death of 2-week-old Caliyah.
The prosecution played lengthy police body camera videos in court Tuesday afternoon.
Jurors also heard from several Newton County sheriff’s deputies who responded to the missing person’s call at the defendants Covington area home on October 7, 2017.
They recounted their initial contact with defendants Bell and McNabb the day they reported their youngest child was missing.
Newton County Sheriff’s deputy Joshua Hicks testified he came upon McNabb, who said he had searched for his daughter in the woods, near the family’s residence. Hicks said McNabb was wet and muddy.
Little Caliyah’s body was discovered in a bag in woods near the couple’s mobile home park the next day. The coroner determined the infant died of blunt force trauma.
In the police video, Bell and McNabb claim they woke to find the baby missing and the door to their trailer ajar.
Testimony resumes Wednesday. Jurors are scheduled to visit the site where searchers located the infant’s body.
