Jasper County Sheriff Donnie Pope said this started around 11:20 a.m. when a woman was walking along Grandview Road. The woman said a man in his 40s was clicking his gun at her, but luckily the gun wasn’t loaded.

Deputies were dispatched to the area. Pope said his deputies heard shots from a home and soon were taking fire. The sheriff said the deputies returned fire, eventually hitting the man.

“It's a tragic enough situation already, anytime that there's loss of life. you never want anything like that to happen. but fortunately, none of our people were injured,” Pope said in a press conference Monday afternoon.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to investigate the deputy-involved shooting.

Investigators still are no sure why the man was firing.

The name of the man has not yet been released.

No other injuries were reported.
