A Gwinnett County community is on high alert after an elderly woman died in a house fire.

Friday, fire officials and volunteer residents went door-to-door making sure their neighbors are prepared.

The county's fire and emergency services department organized the visits.

These home safety checks took place in the neighborhood where the fatal fire occurred.

Officials and volunteers went over preparation plans, educated residents about fire safety, and checked smoke alarms.

Fire officials recommend that each home has more than one working smoke alarm, regularly test those smoke alarms, and have a fire safety plan and practice it.
