Police were called out to the Covington Glen apartment complex on Thicket Way around 12:30 a.m., and when they arrived they found a masked gunman dressed in all black dead in the parking lot.

A man living in the building told officers three armed men broke into his apartment. Then, a physical altercation took place when the resident began wrestling one of the invaders. He told officers he managed to break free, retrieved his own handgun, then started shooting at the suspects.

Police said both parties exchanged gunfire inside and outside the apartment. That's when the resident shot and killed one of the suspects. According to police, the other two home invaders escaped.

Police said there were several people inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, including the resident who fired back, two adults, and two children. The kids were in their bedroom or bedrooms when the shooting took place. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

A bullet from the gunfight went through the wall and into a nearby unit, but no one inside that apartment was injured either.

Police also think bullets likely hit a number of cars parked in the lot. Officers could be seen early Thursday morning checking the area to see if anyone else was hit by a stray bullet.

Investigators think the home invaders targeted the apartment, but they aren't sure why. Officers told FOX 5 the unit could've been chosen at random or possibly for a specific reason.
