ATLANTA - Since we are the center of the college football universe, I am, quite naturally, very excited about the new season about to unfold Thursday night! Yes, I said, Thursday night!
Georgia State University will be hosting Big South champion Kennesaw State University at Georgia State Stadium in an intriguing match-up of a couple of schools that are carving their own niches in the local college football scene. Glad to see it. I hope each will have the opportunity to face UGA and Tech in the near future. A good showing by both Thursday night will continue to cement their place in our football consciousness.
The Georgia Bulldogs have a tough act to follow --themselves. Expectations are insanely high after their runner-up finish in the national championship game last season. Thanks to another outstanding recruiting period, the Dogs are probably more talented than they were last year, but they will be without a lot of the very key players that made last season so successful. Given their new status as "Tuscaloosa East," they will be a big target for everyone they play. Key games will be on the road at South Carolina, LSU and Florida. Fortunately, the November 10th game against Auburn will be at home.
It has been a lot of fun watching the incredible steps forward the Georgia football program has taken since the arrival of Kirby Smart. I feel safe predicting a return to the SEC Championship game and beyond.
Iwant so bad for Georgia Tech to live up to its proud name and history! I believe it is unacceptable that a program with such a great history, located in downtown Atlanta, should not be more prominent on the national scene. Expectations are low, and that may be a good thing. A group of capable runningbacks should make the offense strong and quarterback Taquon Marshall is as exciting as any athlete in the country.
The time is now for our Falcons. As I've mentioned before, the window for this roster of players is closing. They have the right combination of talent, youth and veteran experience. Wouldn't it be something if they became the first team to ever play for the Super Bowl title in their own hometown?
If that weren't enough, beginning September 27th, we at FOX 5 will be hosting "FOX 5 THURSDAY NIGHT KICKOFF," every Thursday! We are pleased to be working for a network that has made such a HUGE commitment to sports --it will keep us extra busy this fall!
Don't worry, we will continue to be "IN YOUR FACE!" every Friday night at 11pm, bringing you the best high school football action in the land on High 5 Sports! We've been producing this show for decades and it gets bigger, better and more exciting every season! Among all the great joys we experience in the Sports Bunker every fall is watching the young athletes we've been featuring since 9th grade move on to college careers and the NFL. But if you've been following High 5 Sports you know it's more than that. It's about you and our community. Football, as it always has, just brings us together!
At the risk of jinxing our major league baseball team, we may well experience our first Braves division title since 2013! It's already been an exciting season, and it looks like it may well spill into October!
Then there's the Hawks...
And if can handle even more excitement, Atlanta United is the best team in Major League Soccer! Will that translate into a first championship for owner, Arthur Blank? We will find out this fall as well.
This is not only the most wonderful time of the year, it is the FASTEST time of the year! Blink --and I'll be back at Spring Training with the Braves!
All that's missing is... my Atlanta Thrashers hockey team! And yes, I am still bitter about that!
