EAST POINT, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Vice President Mike Pence visited the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in East Point, Georgia on Thursday afternoon.
Air Force Two touched down at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Thursday afternoon. The vice president then headed to tour the Atlanta regional ICE facility located in East Point.
he vice president made it clear during his visit President Donald Trump sent him to thank Atlanta-area ICE agencies for their hard work. He noted the office was one of the busiest in the nation and have gone through great lengths to keep the country safe.
He also touched on President Trump’s plans to address issues along the southern border.
“I don't have to tell any of the ICE agents gathered here that we have a crisis on our southern border. That crisis on our southern border is driving drugs and crime and human trafficking here in the streets of Atlanta. You face it and confront it every day. You face oftentimes without regard to your personal safety,” the vice president told a room of ICE agents and reporters.
The vice president praised the recent criminal arrests which he touted as helping to keep drug dealers, gang members, and human traffickers off the streets of Atlanta and out of the U.S.
He also made remarks about Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.
"I would say to the [Atlanta] mayor that criminal illegal immigrants, gang members on our streets are what inflict misery. The flow of illegal drugs like cocaine and meth and fentanyl inflict misery and wreck our families and communities, human trafficking inflicts misery. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the men and women who enforce our laws do not inflect misery, they bring safety and security to the people of Atlanta,” the vice president said.
“It was an honor to welcome Vice President Pence to Georgia with Senator Perdue and Congressman Collins to talk about how we keep Georgia families – and all Americans – safe,” said Governor Brian Kemp.
“It was an honor to have Vice President Pence in Georgia today to hear directly from the brave men and women who wear the ICE uniform,” said Senator David Perdue. “ICE is a critical component of our country’s national security strategy. Our ICE law enforcement officers dedicate their lives to combating human trafficking, protecting communities, and keeping drugs off the street. President Trump and Vice President Pence have taken action to make sure ICE officers have the resources they need to keep Georgians and Americans safe. To all of our law enforcement officers – we’ve got your backs.”
The vice president went to a private fundraiser in Atlanta before returning to Air Force Two.
