A Georgia State Patrol squad car ended up in the South River after the trooper driving it tried to stop a car leading him on a high-speed chase.

The GSP told FOX 5 the suspect's car went by the trooper around midnight at a high rate of speed on Interstate 85 south near Clairmont Road.  The trooper chased the car, with the pursuit going through Midtown and then downtown Atlanta.

The suspect, identified as Tyrone Breedlove, 48, got off the highway at the I-85 Metropolitan Parkway exit. The trooper then performed a pit maneuver on the suspect's car. That's how the GSP vehicle ended up in the river.

Breedlove jumped out of his car and ran off, according to the GSP. It took about an hour for troopers to find him. He was described as being heavily intoxicated and without a drivers license.

Paramedics took Breedlove to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He's now facing a number of charges, including fleeing, DUI, and obstruction.

A female passenger in the suspect's car, Connie Walker, 50, remained on scene after the crash. She was taken to Atlanta Medical Center after complaining of back pains.

Troopers found what they said appeared to be a number of stolen items inside Breedlove's car, including cell phones and robot vacuums.

The trooper has since been released from the hospital. He suffered some scrapes and bruises.  GSP officials said it could've been much worse, saying he's lucky he wasn't seriously injured in the wreck.
