New developments Thursday in the effort to put out a fire that's burned at an unpermitted landfill in the City of South Fulton for months.

Elected officials have now secured a half million dollars in emergency funds from Georgia’s Board of Natural Resources to help smother the fire.

It has burned since September at the landfill on Bishop Road.

The smoke has spread into the surrounding community.

The EPD said efforts to get the landfill's owner to put out the fire haven't been successful, so it will use state funds and resources to put the fire out.

State representatives said they are working with the police department and the fire department to address the issue.
