A security guard was shot overnight with the bullets coming from inside the northwest Atlanta complex he was protecting.

Police said the 59-year-old guard, identified as Edmund Garey, was sitting inside the shack at the front of the Allen Hills complex, located just off of Martin Luther King Drive near Interstate 285. Three shots penetrated the shack's metal door, one of them hitting the guard in the ankle.

The guard told police he was sitting in the shack, heard the shots fired and then realized he'd been hit. The injured guard drove himself to a nearby Texaco and an ambulance transported him to Grady Memorial, where he's being treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The victim, who is a regular guard at the complex, said he didn't see the shooter. He told police that there hadn't been any confrontation that would make him a target.

Investigators hope surveillance video will help them identify the gunman. They're also canvassing the complex to see if anyone saw what happened.

The shack obviously isn't bulletproof, and on the front of it there is a sign saying no guns are allowed on complex grounds.
