ATHENS, Ga. - The Athens-Clarke County Police have arrested a suspect in the rape of a University of Georgia student by a fake Uber driver after another victim came forward.
Police said the UGA student requested an Uber Friday just before 3 a.m., and got into a car she believed was her rideshare.
The victim told police she determined mid-ride that it was not her requested Uber, and asked the driver to let her out of the car. Police said the driver raped her before letting her go.
Friday afternoon, another victim came forward to report an incident that happened about an hour before the reported rape. She told police that she too thought she was being picked up by an Uber and that the driver "touched her private areas before she was able to get out of the car," police said.
The victim was able to take multiple pictures of the suspect, who another officer recognized from a traffic stop for having no headlights on the night before, police said. That officer then saw the vehicle in downtown Athens at around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Officials said the suspect, Emerson Redd, has been charged with rape.
The investigation is ongoing.
