A terrible accident left a young suspected car thief seriously and his passenger, who police believe to be his brother, dead.

Cobb County police said it happened just before 10 p.m. Tuesday night on Mableton Parkway near the Doyle Avenue intersection. Police say they had been pursuing the suspects after seeing them near  Shenandoah Trail in Austell but stopped when they turned on the parkway.

According to officials, the driver of the stolen Nissan entered the northbound lane to pass a vehicle. They then collided head-on with a Lexus RX350 and then was hit by an Infiniti M37.

One of the suspects, both described by police as being very young, died at the scene. Paramedics rushed the 16-year-old survivor to the hospital in critical condition. He managed to tell officers that the deceased was his brother, but investigators on the scene were not able to verify that because neither of them had identification. That also prevented officers from determining the suspects' age.

A witness told FOX 5 News the Nissan was going at a high rate of speed with its lights off before slamming into the SUV.

The driver of the Lexus was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Cobb County Police's Select Traffic Enforcement Program, known as the STEP team, has taken over the investigation.
