Atlanta Police say they believe a 21-year-old man who was shot multiple times in the parking deck of a popular Midtown Atlanta destination was shot in self-defense.

The shooting happened on Dec. 13 a little before 7:30 p.m. at an Atlantic Station parking deck. After an investigation, police say that the shooting victim had traveled to the area "to engage in a criminal transaction."

The next day, police say they were contacted by a man who said he was the shooter in the incident. After talking with the suspect, police believe the shooting was an act of self-defense.

Officials now say the victim confronted the shooter with a gun and, during the confrontation, the shooter pulled out his own gun and fired.

Atlanta Police say this was not a random confrontation and are now investigating the cause of the fight.

Currently, police will not file charges against the shooter.

At the time, Atlantic Station issued the following statement regarding the shooting:

“Atlantic Station would like to keep you updated on an ongoing situation. This evening, a fatal shooting occurred in the parking deck of our property. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim. We are working closely with our Security Team and the Atlanta Police Department. The safety and security of everyone who visits Atlantic Station is our top concern, and we will keep you updated as more details emerge.”
