Police in Cobb County said a traffic stop turned into a shootout between officers and the occupants of the vehicle.

It happened around 5:25 p.m. at the Fidelity Bank located at 1220 N. Cobb Parkway NE near Bells Ferry Road. Cobb County police said they pulled a car over which was believed to have been involved in an armed robbery.

Police said the passenger of the SUV, later identified by police as 18-year old Devonte Williams, jumped out and started firing at officers. Officers returned fire and struck the passenger who was rushed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Neither of the officers was shot. One suffered a minor injury as he was trying to get behind his car door for cover. He was checked out at the hospital and was later released.

Police said the driver eventually surrendered peacefully and never left the SUV.

"The driver had his hands out the window in the air like 'don't shoot me,'" said Russell Atkins, a witness.

SKYFOX 5 flew over the scene shortly after 6:30 p.m. and spotted a person being led out of the crime scene in handcuffs. It was not immediately clear how that person relates to the incident.

Williams was listed in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to investigate the shooting.
