Odes Dupree sentenced to life without parole

ATLANTA - Sentencing took place Monday morning for a man convicted of killing a Douglas County great-grandmother.

Last week, a jury found Odes Dupree, 54, guilty of 2 counts of malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, robbery and burglary in the first degree. The verdict was reached just hours after closing arguments in the November 2014 death of Florene Duke, 75.

Monday morning, Dupree was sentenced to life without parole. 

Investigators said Dupree bound Duke with shoelaces so he could rob her apartment. Prosecutors said he removed televisions and other items from her unit so he could sell them for money to buy cocaine.

Police said Dupree, who had just gotten out of jail before the crime, was Duke's neighbor. Amanda Lindley told jurors she had tried to call her grandmother and became concerned when she could not get through. She went to Duke's apartment and found her lifeless in her bedroom.

Following the verdict, Dupree told the judge he didn't feel his attorneys represented him properly and said he plans to appeal.
