Gwinnett Co. couple: Thieves steal car, source of income at motel
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - UPDATE (August 18): The stolen vehicle has been recovered by the Anderson County Sheriff's Office on Thursday morning, August 18.
A local couple is out of luck and out of work after thieves stole their car Friday at a motel in Gwinnett County.
David Wells and Ricky Johnson told FOX 5 their car was their only source of income. They depended on their white 1999 Honda Passport to make a living as drivers for apps including Post Mate and Door Dash.
Johnson said Uber has a program that allows drivers with older vehicles to rent out cars at a discounted rate to perform routes.
But the two said crooks made off with the vehicle as they transferred from one room to another at the Motel 6 on Oakbrook Parkway. The pair moved into the motel two weeks ago after a mold problem forced them out of their house.
"It's like a distorted reality. I can't believe our car is gone. I am devastated. It was our source of income,"Johnson said.
"I'm just wondering what are we going to do. I am scared and worried. And it's ironic because if you talk to some of the guests here, they would tell you, 'if you asked us for help, we would have helped you.'"
The Motel 6 manager told FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell there are more than 90 surveillance cameras on the property.
He said he's working with Gwinnett County Police to track down the crooks.
