Latin Academy Charter School holds rally, fundraiser

ATLANTA - Parents, teachers and community members gathered at Latin Academy Charter School Sunday and held their first of several fundraisers to try and save their school.

"I feel this school makes me do better, makes me strive for more, it makes me want to do more," said Christian Troy who is a seventh grader at Latin Academy.

According to an Atlanta Police report filed by the Latin Academy School Board, founder and former Director of Finances, Christopher Clemons used school credit cards on outings like dinner, nightclubs and travel not related to the school.  The police report states the total loss is more than $600,000. The school board was expected to make a decision last week, but after hearing from several parents, teachers and students they decided to delay their vote until the next school board meeting on March 17.

The “Save Our School Rally” brought parents, teachers and community members together.

"They are always on point and the teachers are always willing to go the extra mile," said parent, Senique Bailey.

"I am very pleased that he is here where he is able to explore many options, he is able to develop higher than where he was," said parent, Renee Sewell.

The charter school hopes through a donation website, school fundraising events and community efforts they will raise the amount needed to continue educated their students at one of the highest ranking schools. They have setup a fundraising website hoping to raise $250,000 by March 17.

Parents have also established an online fundraiser to help save the school. Anyone who wished to donate can go to gofundme.com/operationlacs.
