GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - A Gwinnett County deputy has been arrested after he is seen on video punching a female inmate.
Friday evening, Gwinnett County Sheriff's Officials released video taken inside a jail cell. Sheriff's officials say it shows Deputy Aaron Masters punching the inmate in the head three times. The inmate is 26-year-old Shelby Clark. She was arrested in July for Simple Battery.
Sheriff's Investigators say on Aug. 20, Clark was unruly, and attacked several deputies. Investigators say she kicked one deputy, bit another, and punched Deputy Masters in the groin. All three needed medical attention.
However, it wasn't during that ruckus that Deputy Masters fought back. Investigators say that happened after deputies had subdued Clark, and she was back in her cell. Deputies say she was self-harming and when Masters went into her cell to get her to stop, that's when he is seen in the video punching her.
Masters has worked at the jail for three years. He was part of the Rapid Response Team. He has a clean record. He no longer works for the jail. An investigation revealed his actions were unprovoked and outside the jail's policies and procedures.
"There's no room for a quick temper in this job and this behavior will not be tolerated," Sheriff Butch Conway said.
Masters turned himself in Friday afternoon. He was later released on bond.
