Georgia Tech former assistant head coach Tasha Butts dies at 41 from breast cancer

Georgia Tech has announced the death of its former women's basketball associate head coach, Tasha Butts. 

Butts, age 41, passed away Monday after a two-year battle with breast cancer, according to Georgia Tech's website.

Butts was a star player, nationally-recognized coach and first-year head coach at Georgetown University before her death.

Butts served 4 years at Georgia Tech under head coach Nell Fortner, arriving in 2019 as an assistant coach.

She was promoted to associated head coach in April 2021. In her four years with the Yellow Jackets, she helped guide the team to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, two 20-plus win campaigns, 9 wins over ranked opponents and the program's highest outright Atlantic Coast Conference in program history.

Butts became the 11th head coach at Georgetown in April 2023.

Butts was diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer in 2021. She stepped away from coaching last month.

Butts is a native of Milledgeville. She attended Baldwin High School. According to Georgia Tech, she remains the all-time leading scorer at the school.

She attended Tennessee from 2000 to 2004, playing for Hall of Fame coach Pat Summit. She was part of four SEC regular-season championship teams at the school. She also had a brief career in the WNBA after being drafted by the Minnesota Lynx in 2004. She also played in Charlotte and Houston.

Before coaching at Georgia Tech, she was an assistant at Duquesne, UCLA and LSU.

Butts is survived by her parents, her brother and a nephew.
