Owner: Dog shot, child almost hit in Adairsville

A pit bull is being treated at a Marietta veterinary clinic after someone shot it near its Adairsville home Sunday afternoon. The dog was badly wounded when someone shot it after it wandered into a neighbor's yard.

Susan Gilliland's 4-year-old pit bull and one of her other dogs slipped through a fence at her home while her husband mowed the lawn. They wound up at a neighbor's house up the street and were in the backyard with a young child when a shot rang out. Someone armed with a rifle had shot Sophie in the leg.

Sophie underwent surgery Monday. Gilliland can't imagine why anyone would shoot her dog. She fears for her other three dogs and the other pets on her property.

Sophie’s owner has started an online fun to help cover vet bills. Anyone would like to contribute can click here.
