Divers search for woman missing on Lake Lanier

Officials were back out on Lake Lanier Monday searching for a woman who fell into the water Sunday afternoon. Weather conditions forced crews to suspend the search Sunday night.

According to the Hall County Sheriff's Office, someone called Hall County Fire Services and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources around 4 p.m. to report a possible drowning between Port Royale and Old Federal Park.

Officials said a 31-year-old woman jumped from a sailboat to go swimming but the boat drifted away from her.

A man was still on the boat and told authorities the woman became too tired to swim back to the boat. He also told authorities he went in the water to try to save the woman after failing to get a lifeline to her.

Once the woman went under water she did not return to the surface, the man said.

Diver spent one hour looking for the woman before calling off the search due to inclement weather with lightning moving into the area.
