A fire at a Decatur apartment building has displaced around 15 families Sunday morning.

The Red Cross said volunteers are helping approximately 60 people who were displaced in the fire at the Avondale Forest Apartments on the 3300 block of Mountain Circle.

By the time crews got to the fire, which happened overnight, they say they saw flames on the second floor near the center of the building.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire quickly to the apartment of origin and evacuated a sleeping family.

Officials say a firefighter suffered a sprained knee while working the fire, but that was the only major injury.

Caseworkers from the Red Cross will work with the families to help them back on their feet.
