Ponce City Market starts work on rooftop ice skating rink

The roof of Ponce City Market is getting a fancy, and cold, upgrade.

The popular market has begun construction on Atlanta's forthcoming rooftop ice rink destination, which will be called "Skate the Sky."

The rink will be able to host 90 to 100 skaters at one time.

Construction workers used a crane to life a chiller 10 stories over Ponce De Leon Avenue to place a chiller on the roof of the building.

The chiller will keep the rink cold throughout the winter season and will also allow the venue to run air conditioning in the tent during the warmer months.

Officials say this is something the area doesn't have yet.

"We're pretty excited about it," Slater Hospitality's Brett Hull-Ryde said. "I don't think there's another rooftop skating rink anywhere in Atlanta or maybe even in the Southeast."

The rink will be open Monday, Nov. 20.
