Police are searching for a gunman after a man was shot in southwest Atlanta early Friday morning.

Investigators said around 12:30 a.m. Friday, a gunman knocked on the door at a "rooming house" in the 800 block of Beckwith Street, and a 22-year-old resident answered the door.  The person pounding on the door then shot him in the stomach, before fleeing the scene.

Paramedics rushed the adult male victim to Grady Memorial Hospital. At last check, he was in critical condition, undergoing surgery.

Police describe the shooting location as a "rooming house" near the Atlanta University Center.  A number of the people living in the home told investigators the victim was a Clark-Atlanta student, but police are still trying to verify that information.

There were other people inside the home when the shooting took place. Officers said those folks heard the pounding and the gunshot but didn't get a good look at the shooter.

At this point, police have no motive or suspect description to release.
