Man shot by SWAT officer in northwest Atlanta dies

Police said the man shot during a standoff in northwest Atlanta late last year has died.

Atlanta Police were called to a home on Linkwood Road just before 2 p.m. on Dec. 28 after residents said they found a broken window and believed an estranged family member was inside.

Officers tried to go into the home to search, but were stopped by a man, later identified as 34-year-old Alton Hall. Police said Hall told them he was armed

Atlanta Police’s SWAT unit was called to the scene to assist in the incident. Police said negotiators spoke with him for about 45 minutes, but would not comply with any requests and continues to make threatening comments, specifically that he would shoot at officers as he left the home.

Investigators said during the standoff, Hall had spotted a SWAT team member near the front door. Police said the officer fired two shots, one which hit Hall in the lower abdomen. Hall then locked the front door.

Police said they then made a tactical entry, found Hall, and rendered first aid. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

The residents at the home evicted Hall and had a protective order against him. Hall was charged with aggravated stalking and burglary, both felonies.

Police said no firearms were found inside the home.

Thursday, police confirmed Hall had died as a result of his injuries.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigators was asked to investigate the shooting.
