LITHONIA, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - DeKalb County Police say a 3-year-old boy was accidentally shot by a young relative Saturday at a home in Lithonia.
An investigator tells FOX 5 News that police were called to a home on Chiapuk Court just after noon. When they arrived, they found the toddler injured from a gunshot wound to his rear, police said.
An adult was home at the time but had stepped outside for a moment to visit with a neighbor.
Police say the gun was not easily accessible to the child, but it was within reach, and the child was able to grab the weapon and fire a shot. Investigators say the gun was unlocked and loaded.
The 3-year-old was taken to Children's Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston for treatment. Officers expect the child to be released from the hospital soon.
No charges have been announced in the case.
