Police: Man tries to lure children at Jefferson bus stop

Police in Jefferson, Georgia are praising a school bus driver’s actions in a stranger danger encounter Tuesday afternoon.

The Jefferson Police Department said a city school bus was dropping off two siblings at their bus stop along Jett Roberts Road after school Tuesday. Police said a man was waiting there and called out to the children to try to get them to ride in his vehicle, even calling the children by their names.

The bus driver didn’t recognize the man and neither did the children. The bus driver refused to let the siblings off the bus. The bus driver instead called their mother, police reported, who said she didn’t send anyone to pick them up from the bus stop.

The man eventually drove away in the vehicle.

Police describe the man as being older, balding, but with some gray hair. He was driving a gray 4-door car, according to police.

Investigators said the bus did have outer facing cameras but didn’t get a good shot of the man or the car.

Police are asking residents to be on the lookout for the man or the car, especially near bus stops, cruising slowly through neighbors, or where children are known to play.

Anyone with information on the encounter is asked to call the Jefferson Police Department.

Jefferson, Georgia is located about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta.
