Families forced into bitter cold after raging fire

Nearly two dozen people are without shelter after a fire destroyed an apartment building early Thursday in DeKalb County.

Crews said flames engulfed several units inside the Oak Tree Villas Apartments off Kensington Road. There were no injuries reported.

Captain Eric Jackson told FOX 5 investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire.

In the meantime, Red Cross volunteers are assisting victims by providing food, shelter and other supplies. Sixteen adults and five children were forced out into the bitter cold as a result of the fire, according to Jackson.

The weather also made fire-fighting efforts a bit more complicated. The fire department called in crews to spray more salt on nearby hills to reduce any additional hazards.
