Coast Guard suspends search for missing Decatur man in Bahamas

UPDATE: The Coast Guard suspended its search for Reco Scott at 5:57 p.m. on Saturday. The 32-year-old man reportedly went overboard from a Carnival cruise ship 10 miles northwest of the Berry Islands around 5 a.m. on Friday.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Mr. Scott during this extremely difficult time,” said Christopher Eddy, search and rescue mission coordinator for the Coast Guard Seventh District command center. “Suspending a search is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make and it is made with great care and consideration.”

Crews searched for more than 29 hours covering 1,064 square miles. Scott was on his honeymoon with his wife Angelijica Scott, according to a family member who spoke to FOX 5.

A search is underway for a Decatur man who went overboard from a Carnival cruise ship near the Berry Islands in the Bahamas, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard news release says 32-year-old Reco Scott of Decatur went overboard from the ninth deck of the Carnival Liberty cruise ship around 5 a.m. on Friday. The ship was about 10 miles northwest of the Berry Islands at the time.

A family member told FOX 5's George Franco that Scott was on his honeymoon with his wife, Angelijica Scott, who he married a year ago. The couple got married last Saturday and decided to go on a cruise for their honeymoon. Loved ones are asking you to keep Scott and his family in your prayers.

Cruise ship crew members launched a search boat and notified the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard says it directed a search helicopter and cutter to the area to look for Scott.
