Former boxing champ aims to K.O. childhood obesity: A quick Internet search of the name Janaya “Jai” Davis reveals some impressive stats for the athlete as both an amateur and professional boxer. But now, the Metro Atlanta resident says she’s taking on her toughest opponent yet — childhood obesity — and aiming for a definitive knockout.
The Good Day feature team spent the morning at BoxFit Fitness & Performance Studio in College Park, opened by Jai Davis as a place to help adults and children improve their physical fitness and develop healthier habits. Of course, it’s no surprise to anyone that boxing offers big benefits to those looking to increase their endurance and stamina, and to develop lean muscle and burn fat. So, Davis says she’s incorporated boxing into her classes and personal training sessions, creating workouts with names like BoxFit (a boxing cardio class) and ShredTensity (muscle-building resistance training).
But Davis says one of her biggest areas of focus right now is in reducing childhood obesity and, consequently, raising self-esteem. To that end, Davis says she was moved to create Jai Fit Academy — a free 90-day fitness camp for qualifying children between the ages of five and 17.
BoxFit Fitness & Performance Studio is located at 1880 Harvard Avenue in College Park, and is open from 5:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
