Near record-breaking heat hitting Atlanta as spring officially begins

After a week that started with severe storms and a sudden plunge into winter-like temperatures, North Georgia is finally "crawling out" of the cold and into a possible record-breaking spring weekend.

After a week that started with severe storms and a sudden plunge into winter-like temperatures, North Georgia is finally "crawling out" of the cold and into a record-breaking spring weekend.

The warming trend begins today as temperatures climb to76 degrees, nearly 10 degrees above the seasonal average. This warm-up coincides perfectly with the official start of spring later this morning. While the early morning hours remain chilly—with some areas like Blue Ridge hovering near freezing and Atlanta starting in the 40s—a southwest wind will help push temperatures into the 70s by this afternoon.

The real heat arrives Sunday, which is forecasted to be the warmest day of the week. With a projected high of 86 degrees, Atlanta will come within a single degree of a long-standing record of 87 set back in 1907.

Dry conditions are expected to persist through most of next week. While there is a slim 10% chance of a stray shower on Saturday, the FOX 5 Atlanta Storm Team says any rain will likely be confined to the North Georgia Mountains and far northeast counties like Rabun and Habersham.

Weekend Forecast Breakout

Today: ☀️ 76 degrees — Mostly sunny and beautiful.

Saturday: 🌤️80 degrees — Warm with a 10% chance of mountain showers.

Sunday: 🔥 86 degrees — Record-challenging heat; peak temperatures.

Rain moves into metro Atlanta, North Georgia Tuesday into Wednesday

North Georgia is getting a short break from the deep cold Tuesday, allowing temperatures to climb high enough to keep the next round of precipitation all rain.

Rain moves in tonight

"Starting out here on this Tuesday morning, it is naturally cold, but maybe not as cold as it has been," said FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Joanne Feldman. "The most important part of today’s forecast is that we warm up enough before this cold front arrives so that anything we are tracking over the next 24 hours is purely rain."

Most of the day will stay dry across metro Atlanta, with rain holding off until sunset or later. Feldman noted that those leaving home this morning likely will not need an umbrella yet, as the steadiness does not move in until later in the evening.

Northwest Georgia will see rain first, with steady showers arriving by around 4 p.m. before spreading southeast. By 6 p.m., rain is expected to reach the northwest metro and continue eastward overnight.

KEEP UP WITH THE LATEST BY DOWNLOADING THE FREE FOX 5 STORM TEAM APP AND FOLLOWING @FOX5STORMTEAM ON X, FORMERLY TWITTER

Steady rain overnight

Showers will become steady overnight and linger into Wednesday. While the heaviest rain will move out to the south and east, scattered showers could still affect the north metro and the mountains Wednesday afternoon. Rainfall totals through Wednesday are expected to range from one-third of an inch to over half an inch in some areas.

Milder temperatures Tuesday

Despite some clouds, temperatures will rebound thanks to a southerly wind ahead of the front. Feldman said the wind direction will be a major factor in taking the region out of the teens and 20s and bringing highs well into the 50s. Some locations south of Atlanta could briefly touch 60 degrees this afternoon.

Temperature rollercoaster

Even as colder air arrives later in the week, temperatures are expected to stay in the 40s and safely above freezing tonight. Highs will dip to around 46 degrees Thursday before a gradual warm-up resumes. By the weekend and early next week, 60s are expected to return, bringing a more seasonable feel back to North Georgia.

Georgia Winter Storm Warning: Snow totals, timing, and rare -15° wind chill forecast

A Winter Storm Watch now covers the entire Atlanta metro area, moving in from the east.

Georgia is bracing for a potent winter storm beginning Friday night that is expected to bring accumulating snow, dangerous wind chills, and "impossible" travel conditions to much of the state.

Forecasters warn that temperatures will plummet as the weekend progresses, ushering in the coldest air the region has seen in several years. The FOX 5 Storm Team and the National Weather Service are urging residents to complete all preparations by tonight.

Extreme Cold, Winter Storm warnings

A complex web of watches and warnings covers north and central Georgia. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday for a massive swath of the state, including Cherokee, Cobb, North Fulton, South Fulton, DeKalb, Rockdale, Newton, Clayton, Henry, Butts, Jasper, Jones, Wilkinson, Gwinnett, Hall, Walton, and Clarke counties.

Additionally, a rare Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for every county in north and central Georgia, including Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, and dozens more extending down through Macon and Columbus. This warning runs from 7 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Snow will ‘stick immediately’

FOX 5 Storm Team chief meteorologist David Chandley warns that while conditions are quiet now, they won't stay that way.

"Snow begins after midnight and then likely by Saturday sunrise," Chandley said. "Whatever it snows and whenever it snows it will stick immediately and travel impacts are expected."

FOX 5 Storm Team meteorologist Alex Forbes emphasized the severity of the cold following the snow. "This is easily the coldest air we've seen in several years," Forbes said. "ALL DOMESTICATED PETS should be inside. No exception."

Stay connected with FOX LOCAL. For 24/7 winter storm coverage—Download Now.

Atlanta snow timing

The storm will move from northwest to southeast, with impacts peaking during the first half of Saturday.

Friday Night (8 p.m. – Midnight): Light snow showers may begin in far northwest Georgia.

Saturday Morning (3 a.m. – 8 a.m.): Snow spreads across the I-20 and I-85 corridors, reaching a line from Columbus to Macon by breakfast.

Saturday Afternoon: The heaviest snow accumulations occur through early afternoon. Wind gusts will reach 35 mph, creating "blowing snow."

Saturday Evening: Snow tapers off by dinner time, but temperatures crash.

Saturday Night – Sunday Morning: Extreme cold settles in with dangerous wind chills.

‘Anomalous’ arctic airmass

Forecast data shows an "anomalous" mid-level trough swinging into the Southeast, meeting moisture from a rapidly intensifying low-pressure system off the coast. An arctic airmass will reinforce the cold, ensuring any precipitation falls as snow.

Models suggest a high confidence in the setup, though meteorologists are watching for "mesoscale banding"—intense narrow strips of heavy snow—that could cause totals to vary wildly across a single county.

RELATED STORIES

Snow in metro Atlanta this weekend | Possible accumulations, timing, watches, and warnings

Snow storm: Cancellations, delays & closings in metro Atlanta, North Georgia

Snow, extreme cold in Georgia: What you can do today to get ready

State of emergency declared for Georgia ahead of this weekend's storm

Atlanta Gas Light shares winter safety tips ahead of cold weather

North Georgia snow storm: Warming centers for residents

How much will it snow in North Georgia?

Snow totals will vary by region, with the highest amounts expected east and northeast of Atlanta.

Metro Atlanta: 1 to 2 inches of snow is likely, with some areas seeing up to 3 inches.

Northeast Georgia Mountains: 3 to 5 inches are forecast, with 6 inches possible in Habersham, White, Stephens, and Rabun counties.

West Georgia: A dusting is expected, though "bursts" could lead to 1 or 2 inches locally.

Because the ground is already cold, Chandley noted the snow will be a "dry powdery kind" that sticks immediately.

‘Dangerous to impossible’ travel

The primary hazards are life-threatening cold and hazardous roads. Forecasters warn of "dangerous to impossible" travel conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

The extreme cold poses a major risk to infrastructure and health. Wind chills will drop between 0 and -15 degrees in north Georgia. Residents should prepare for potential power outages, downed trees due to wind, and ruptured water pipes. Forbes advises homeowners to "drip your faucets," noting that 48+ hours of sub-freezing temperatures historically lead to pipe failures.

KEEP UP WITH THE LATEST BY DOWNLOADING THE FREE FOX 5 STORM TEAM APP AND FOLLOWING @FOX5STORMTEAM ON X, FORMERLY TWITTER

How low will it go?

Atlanta Saturday High: 28°F (Chance of precip: 70%)

Atlanta Saturday Night Low: 13°F (Wind chill: -1°F)

Mountain Saturday High: 19°F (Chance of precip: 80%)

Mountain Saturday Night Low: 4°F (Wind chill: -9°F)

Wind Gusts: Up to 35 mph

Groundhog Day deep freeze

The deep freeze persists into Monday morning, Groundhog Day, with lows in the 20s.
Georgia Winter Storm Watch | Crippling ice storm's timing, intensity: 'This is no joke'

Residents across North Georgia and the metro area are bracing for a potentially "crippling" ice storm this weekend that forecasters warn could paralyze travel and knock out power for days.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch as a powerful arctic high-pressure system prepares to collide with moisture moving into the region. Meteorologists expect freezing rain to be the primary hazard, with significant ice accumulations likely to begin Saturday afternoon and persist through Sunday.

Georgia Winter Storm Watch

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for a massive portion of the state. Forecasters warn of significant icing with total accumulations of around four-tenths of an inch possible, though some mountainous areas could see even higher totals.

Affected Counties:

Northern Georgia (Watch starts 1 a.m. Saturday): Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Chattooga, Gordon, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Floyd, Bartow, Cherokee, Forsyth, Hall, Banks, Jackson, Madison, Polk, Paulding, Cobb, North Fulton, and Gwinnett.

Metro Atlanta and Central Georgia (Watch starts 1 p.m. Saturday): Haralson, Carroll, Douglas, South Fulton, DeKalb, Rockdale, Walton, Newton, Morgan, Greene, Taliaferro, Coweta, Fayette, Clayton, Spalding, Henry, Butts, Jasper, Putnam, Hancock, Warren, Jones, Baldwin, Washington, Glascock, and Jefferson.

The FOX 5 Storm Team issued Storm Alert Days for Saturday and Sunday.

‘Major ice storm’ threatens North Georgia

The FOX 5 Storm Team is urging residents to take the threat seriously. FOX 5 Storm Team chief meteorologist David Chandley characterized the system as a major event.

"We’ve got a major ice storm for some in North Georgia. This is no joke," Chandley said. "If you have weight on trees and power lines due to the ice, this is just going to make that worse. It’s going to be windy all the way into your Monday."

Meteorologist Alex Forbes warned that the impact will be long-lasting. "Our high-resolution models continue to call for a destructive ice storm," Forbes said. "Please continue to be prepared to lose power for several days... Just because liquid rain falls, does not mean all of our problems are solved. Think about how long ice sticks around in a glass of Coke that's 38 degrees."

When will the ice hit?

Conditions will deteriorate as the weekend progresses. Residents are encouraged to complete all storm preparations by Friday night.

Friday: Mostly cloudy with scattered rain showers. Temperatures remain above freezing.

Saturday Morning: Cold air begins "nosing" in from the northeast. Wintry mixes may begin near the Georgia-Tennessee border.

Saturday Afternoon: Freezing rain begins in Northeast Georgia and spreads into the metro Atlanta area.

Saturday Night/Sunday Morning: The "main event." Steady freezing rain will cause ice to accrete on trees, power lines, and roads. Temperatures will drop into the 20s.

Sunday Afternoon: A second wave of moisture arrives. While some areas may see a transition to rain, northeast of Atlanta is likely to remain frozen.

Monday Morning: Precipitation tapers off, but dangerously cold air arrives.

PREPARE FOR THE STORM by knowing the different terms the FOX 5 storm team will use while forecasting

How much ice will we see?

The heaviest impacts are expected along an arc from the northern suburbs of Atlanta through Athens and into the mountains.

In these regions, ice totals could reach between a quarter-inch and a half-inch on horizontal surfaces. In the Northeast Georgia mountains, some models suggest totals could approach a full inch. While the "warm nose" of air might bring liquid rain to southern counties, the ground in North Georgia will likely remain a "deep freeze," causing rain to freeze instantly on contact.

What is a ‘cold air damming’ wedge?

Data from the National Weather Service indicates a "remarkable warm nose" of air aloft, sitting over surface temperatures at or below freezing. This specific setup is the classic recipe for freezing rain rather than snow.

A 1040+ mb arctic high-pressure system to the northeast is creating a "cold air damming" wedge. This wedge acts as a dome of cold air hugged against the mountains; as moisture falls into it, evaporative cooling reinforces the cold, making the wedge difficult to break. Recent European and American models have converged on a solution that points toward a major icing event for North Georgia.

Potentially ‘crippling’ ice storm

This is not just a "snow day" for the kids; it is a significant infrastructure threat.

Power Outages: The combination of a half-inch of ice and wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph is a recipe for widespread, prolonged power outages as tree limbs and lines snap.

Travel: Roadways are expected to become nearly impossible to navigate by Saturday night.

Extreme Cold: Following the storm, temperatures will plummet. If you lose power, you may be without heat as temperatures drop into the single digits by Tuesday morning.

How to STAY WARM should you lose power

How cold will it be?

Metro Atlanta Forecast:

Friday: High 51 / Low 37 (40% rain)

Saturday: High 41 / Low 30 (50% rain, shifting to 100% freezing rain at night)

Sunday: High 45 / Low 21 (100% freezing rain/rain)

North Georgia Mountains Forecast:

Saturday: High 38 / Low 27 (60% rain/ice)

Sunday: High 42 / Low 15 (100% freezing rain)

Monday Night: Lows reaching 5.

How long will the freezing cold stay?

The storm departs Monday, but the danger remains. Frigid, unseasonably cold air will move in, meaning any ice that has accumulated will likely stay frozen through Tuesday. Highs on Monday will struggle to reach 30 degrees in many areas. While the sun returns midweek with highs in the 40s by Wednesday, the early part of the week will be defined by a slow thaw and recovery efforts.

When should you be done with preps?

Ahead of the storm, the FOX 5 Storm Team is urging everyone to prepare for the worst. They said all your shopping and home preparations should be done by Saturday at noon.

State and local officials across North Georgia are preparing for a potential winter storm that could bring significant ice and snow beginning Friday night and lasting through the weekend.

What is closed or canceled?

FOX 5 has begun receiving closures related to weather.
Winter Storm Watch: Possible ice totals for North Georgia

The FOX 5 Storm Team stresses that this system is primarily an ice storm, not a snowstorm, making impacts harder to predict and potentially more severe.

A major winter storm expected to move into North Georgia and metro Atlanta this weekend is shaping up to be a dangerous ice event, with forecasters warning that even small shifts in temperature could mean widespread power outages, impassable roads and impacts that linger for days.

When will it begin

Rain and chilly conditions will dominate through Friday, with temperatures starting in the 40s and climbing into the 50s both days. No wintry precipitation is expected during that time, but meteorologists say the calm before the storm should not be mistaken for reduced risk. Colder air will surge in late Friday night, setting the stage for freezing rain, sleet and limited snow beginning after midnight and ramping up significantly by Saturday afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of North Georgia from late Friday through Monday, and officials say additional counties — including parts of metro Atlanta — could be added. The FOX 5 Storm Team stresses that this system is primarily an ice storm, not a snowstorm, making impacts harder to predict and potentially more severe.

How much ice can we expect?

Ice accumulation projections vary by location but paint a troubling picture.

Forecast estimates show between half an inch and more than an inch of ice possible in cities such as Gainesville, Athens and Cornelia, with Atlanta potentially seeing between 0.5 and 0.9 inches. Even a quarter-inch of ice can bring down tree limbs and power lines, and higher amounts dramatically increase the risk of long-lasting outages.

The most dangerous period will be from Saturday night through Sunday, when freezing rain and sleet are expected to be most widespread, especially north of Interstate 20. Travel could become impossible in some areas as ice coats roads, bridges and overpasses. Forecasters warn residents not to discount the threat simply because snowfall totals may be low.

Compounding concerns, gusty winds are expected Monday, which could knock down ice-laden trees and power lines even after precipitation ends. Temperatures may remain below freezing through much of Monday, preventing ice from melting. A deep freeze is then expected Tuesday morning, with lows in the teens, which could further stress infrastructure and delay recovery efforts.

Prepare now

Georgia Power said it is monitoring the storm closely and has crews prepared to respond, but officials caution that restoration efforts can be slowed when roads are icy and conditions remain dangerous.

Gov. Brian Kemp has urged Georgians to prepare now by securing food, filling gas tanks and planning for possible power loss. Forecasters echo that message, recommending residents stock up on nonperishable food, batteries and flashlights, charge devices and power banks, and stay off the roads if conditions deteriorate.

While forecast details may continue to change, officials agree on one message: ice poses a serious and potentially crippling threat, and this storm could affect daily life across North Georgia well into next week.

PREVIOUS STORIES

Winter Storm Watch: 'Crippling' ice, widespread power outages target North Georgia

Georgia winter storm: 'Destructive' ice, snow threatens metro Atlanta

Georgia Power crews stand by as ice threatens long-lasting power outages

Georgia winter storm: Staying warm at home amid the ice, snow

Delta issues travel waiver ahead of winter storm expected in Southeast

Potentially catastrophic winter storm threatens over 30 states, prompts Winter Storm Watches for millions

Georgia winter storm: 5 key terms to know

Georgia snow and ice prep checklist for weekend winter weather

Georgia winter storm: 'Destructive' ice, snow threatens metro Atlanta

A high-impact winter storm is forecast to move through North Georgia this weekend, bringing the threat of significant ice and snow accumulation that could lead to widespread power outages and travel disruptions.

The FOX 5 Storm Team is warning residents to prepare for a "long duration event" starting Saturday that may last into Monday.

Winter Storm in Georgia

A major winter storm system is moving toward the region, with the National Weather Service anticipating impactful wintry weather on Saturday and Sunday. While the exact track and intensity remain uncertain, the storm is expected to bring a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow.

Atlanta ice storm: ‘Destructive’ accumulation

FOX 5 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist David Chandley warned that the potential for ice is the primary concern for the metro area.

"The main concern with this winter weather deal is the ice accumulation for our region," Chandley said. "It’s the ice that really has me concerned."

Chandley noted that while rain returns late Wednesday into Thursday, the weekend brings the "main event."

"The ice accumulation would be destructive. We’re talking about over a half inch of ice in most areas," Chandley said. "That brings down trees, that brings down power lines. So that’s why we have the concern."

Georgia ice storm timing

Wintry precipitation is expected to begin early Saturday and could linger through the start of the workweek.

Wednesday–Friday: Scattered rain showers are expected, but temperatures will remain above freezing.

Saturday morning: The transition to freezing rain begins as temperatures drop.

Saturday night–Sunday: Freezing rain and sleet are likely to continue throughout the day.

Monday morning: Precipitation may switch to snow before ending later in the day.

Snow and ice in this winter storm

The FOX 5 Storm Team is tracking a low-pressure system moving inland from the Pacific while a trough dives into the Southeast. High-pressure "wedging" is expected to play a major role in keeping cold air locked in place.

Data shows a 40% to 50% chance for at least 0.5 inches of ice accumulation for areas north of Interstate 20. There is also a 30% to 45% chance of 2 inches or more of snow in those same northern regions.

Ice, sleet, freezing rain, or snow?

The impact will vary significantly by geography. For far North Georgia, snow is expected to be the primary precipitation type. However, for the majority of the region, including metro Atlanta, a "wintry mix" of freezing rain and sleet is the main threat. Once temperatures drop below freezing on Saturday, they are forecast to stay below 32 degrees until Monday afternoon.

How to prepare for an ice storm

This storm is classified as a "potentially high impact event" with the risk of moderate to major disruptions. Residents should prepare for:

Power outages: Heavy ice accumulation on limbs and lines is likely to cause outages.

Downed trees: A half-inch of ice is often enough to cause widespread tree damage.

Dangerous travel: Significant impacts to road conditions are anticipated through the weekend.

SEE ALSO:

Georgia snow and ice prep checklist for weekend winter weather

Georgia winter storm: Staying warm at home amid the ice, snow

How to dress for a Georgia winter storm

Georgia winter storm: 5 key terms to know

Cobb County’s only winter shelter braces for 12-day freeze as funding thins

Atlanta weather forecast

Metro Atlanta Forecast

Wednesday: High 53 / Low 40 (30% precip)

Thursday: High 53 / Low 44 (60% precip)

Friday: High 53 / Low 35 (60% precip)

Saturday: High 43 / Low 27 (100% precip; rain turning to sleet/ice)

Sunday: High 34 / Low 20 (60% precip; freezing rain)

Monday: High 34 / Low 13

North Georgia Forecast

Wednesday: High 49 / Low 34 (50% precip)

Thursday: High 51 / Low 37 (60% precip)

Friday: High 46 / Low 29 (60% precip; rain/snow mix)

Saturday: High 36 / Low 26 (100% precip; snow/ice mix)

Sunday: High 32 / Low 14 (60% precip; freezing rain/snow)

Monday: High 29 / Low 5

KEEP UP WITH THE LATEST BY DOWNLOADING THE FREE FOX 5 STORM TEAM APP AND FOLLOWING @FOX5STORMTEAM ON X, FORMERLY TWITTER

FOX 5 Storm Alert Days

The FOX 5 Storm Team has declared Saturday and Sunday to be winter Storm Alert Days.

This is the earliest in the year that an alert like this has been issued.

"They’re not something we just throw around.
North Georgia waking up to bitter cold | What to expect rest of week

North Georgia woke up to bitter cold temperatures Tuesday morning, a sharp contrast from just 24 hours earlier, as strong northwest winds ushered in much colder and drier air across the region.

North Georgia woke up to bitter cold temperatures Tuesday morning, a sharp contrast from just 24 hours earlier, as strong northwest winds ushered in much colder and drier air across the region.

Temperatures early this morning hovered in the upper 20s across metro Atlanta, with winds around 15 mph making it feel even colder. Wind chills across much of North Georgia dipped into the teens, creating frigid conditions from the mountains to the metro area.

The FOX 5 Atlanta Storm Team says the gusty winds have also increased fire danger despite light rain that fell Monday morning. With dew points dropping into the teens and dry air firmly in place, officials advise against any outdoor burning, warning fires could quickly get out of control.

RELATED: Fire danger elevated across Georgia through New Year's Eve amid dry, windy conditions

Temperatures varied only slightly across the region, with readings near 31 degrees in Rome and upper 20s elsewhere. Wind chills in parts of metro Atlanta, including Canton and Covington, were actually colder than conditions farther north in Blairsville.

Forecast at a glance 🌤️❄️🌡️

Today: Cold and windy 🧥💨 High around 42 degrees

Tonight: Clear and cold ❄️ Lows back into the 20s

New Year’s Eve: Sunny and calmer 🌞 Highs in the low 50s

New Year’s Day: Partly cloudy and mild 🎉🌤️ High near 57

Friday: Warmer with rain chances 🌧️ Highs near 60

Weekend: Rain tapers off, improving by Saturday afternoon 🌦️➡️☀️

Early next week: Above-average warmth possible 🌡️⬆️

The cold will linger through Tuesday morning, with temperatures expected to climb above freezing by late morning. Highs today will struggle to reach the low 40s — well below the average high of 54 degrees for this time of year.

The good news: the cold snap will be short-lived.Temperatures will begin rebounding within the next 24 hours, leading to a quieter and milder New Year’s Eve.

North Georgia weather: Cloudy start, colder weekend ahead

North Georgia residents woke up to light rain or soggy conditions on Monday morning, along with some fog. The cloud cover will linger for much of Monday morning as light rain gradually moves out, but the sun should come out during the latter half of the day.

Fog could return Tuesday morning

Foggy conditions could return Tuesday morning as another round of low visibility is expected to develop overnight. Computer weather models indicate areas to the east may see the thickest fog, although that could shift depending on how moisture settles across the region.

Monday's high temperature is expected to be about 50 degrees and the overnight low will drop to 32. Temperatures will rise to near 60 degrees by midweek.

Colder air headed our way

However, a colder air mass moves in by the weekend, with Saturday’s high expected to reach only about 48 degrees. Wintry precipitation remains possible in parts of western North Carolina, but Georgia will remain warm enough for rain rather than snow.

"Temperatures fall — and when I say falling, really falling. Plummeting might be a better word," Feldman said. "Saturday is the day that we feel Arctic air coming in for the weekend. It will be sunny, it will be dry, but it’s going to be a lot colder."

Warming centers to open for cold

DeKalb County said it will open warming centers Monday and Tuesday beginning at 6:30 p.m. each day at the following locations:

Frontline Response International, 2585 Gresham Rd. SE, Atlanta

St. Vincent de Paul, 2050-C Chamblee Tucker Rd., Chamblee

Mason Mill Recreation Center, 1340 McConnell Dr., Decatur

Exchange Park Intergenerational Center, 2771 Columbia Dr., Decatur

Golden Door Warming Center (for women and children), 2944 Ember Dr., Decatur

Transportation begins at 6 p.m. with routes throughout the county. Final pickups conclude by 10 p.m. Hot meals, cots, and case management services will be available nightly at Frontline Response International.

For transportation assistance, call Frontline Response Dispatch at 404-334-3610. Walk-ins are welcome at 2585 Gresham Rd. SE starting at noon each activation day.

Metro Atlanta weekend forecast: Clouds linger as occasional showers move in

A gloomy pattern continues across North Georgia heading into the weekend, with stubborn cloud cover and pockets of light rain moving through parts of the region Friday morning.

A gloomy pattern continues across North Georgia heading into the weekend, with stubborn cloud cover and pockets of light rain moving through parts of the region Friday morning.

While this system has looked wetter than it actually is, moisture lifting in from the Gulf will still bring scattered showers at times—especially south of I-20. Rainfall totals will remain light, but conditions will stay damp, gray, and chilly before clearing gradually early next week.

Roads remain well above freezing everywhere, including the mountains, with temperatures mostly holding in the 40s and low 50s. A weak front approaches late Sunday, bringing a small chance of spotty showers into early Monday before drier air returns.

Forecast Breakdown

Friday

🌧️ Clouds, drizzle at times
🌡️ High: 49–53
🌡️ Low: 39–44

Mostly cloudy with scattered light showers, mainly south of I-20. Northern areas see long stretches of dry time.

Saturday

☁️ Mostly cloudy, isolated showers south
🌡️ High: 52–56
🌡️ Low: 40–45

Many start dry, but light rain returns during the afternoon for southern counties. North Georgia stays mostly dry.

Sunday

🌥️ Mostly dry during the day
🌦️ Slight chance late showers (20%)
🌡️ High: 54–58
🌡️ Low: 40–46

A cold front moves through late, producing a few isolated showers overnight into Monday.

Sunshine returns early next week, with slightly warmer temps as clouds break up and conditions gradually improve.

If you’re hitting the road or flying out of Atlanta on Tuesday, prepare for delays. Two rounds of storms are expected to move through north and central Georgia on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

Rain, storms across Georgia on Tuesday

Rain began falling in North Georgia early Tuesday morning, and is expected to continue throughout the day.

NOON UPDATE: Strong storms will develop this afternoon and intensify after sunset, with the highest risk west of I-75, including metro Atlanta. UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for northwest Georgia around 7:30 a.m. The fast-moving storm could produce damaging winds. The warning applies to Floyd, Haralson, Polk, Carroll, and portions of Chattooga, Paulding and Bartow.

TUESDAY WEATHER TIMELINE (ATLANTA METRO)

🌧️ 5–5:30 a.m. — Rain Begins, Umbrellas Needed

Scattered showers lift through the north metro, including Cherokee, Fulton, and Forsyth counties.

No storms or lightning yet — just pockets of moderate rain.

Temps near 61°F, noticeably warmer than Monday.

🌥️ 6–9 a.m. — Off-and-On Showers, Heavier Patches North & West

Rain increases around Bartow County and areas near Lake Lanier.

South side remains mostly dry early, but that won’t last.

Severe storms remain west of Georgia but are approaching quickly.

⛈️ Mid-Morning (9–11 a.m.) — Storm Risk Creeps In

Severe thunderstorm warnings pop up in Alabama; this is the "preview" of what may reach NW Georgia later.

Models suggest weather warnings possible locally after sunrise.

Rain stays scattered, but coverage slowly increases.

🌦️ Late Morning–Afternoon (11 a.m.–4 p.m.) — Waves of Showers & Isolated Storms

Showers and occasional thunderstorms move through the region.

Severe weather remains possible, but not widespread yet.

Temps climb into the low 70s, unusually warm for late November.

⛈️🌪️ Evening (4–8 p.m.) — Storms Pick Up, Highest Severe Risk

As the cold front approaches, storms become more widespread.

Metro Atlanta is under a Level 1 risk (damaging winds, hail, brief tornado possible).

Randolph & Cleburne counties (AL) under Level 2, with higher threats sliding toward Georgia.

⚡ After Sunset–Midnight (8 p.m.–12 a.m.) — Strongest Storm Window

Most intense weather during and after sunset.

Potential for damaging wind gusts or a brief spin-up tornado.

Heavy rain will be widespread — "everyone gets something."

🌧️🌬️ Overnight (12–2 a.m.) — Front Moves Through

Storms finally push east of Atlanta after midnight.

Temperatures begin to fall behind the front.

🌤️ Wednesday Preview

Highs only in the 60s.

A second reinforcing front Wednesday night brings even colder air.

🦃 Thanksgiving Outlook

High near 50°F, dry but cold.

Black Friday Outlook

High near 40°F, the coldest day of the week.

ORIGINAL STORY

The second, stronger round of storms are expected to move through after sunset — between 5 and 9 p.m., sweeping across metro Atlanta and continuing east overnight.

"It is going to be a rough travel day here in the metro and at the airport," Forbes said. "Atlanta is one of those problem spots, but it’s not going to be just us. From Pittsburgh down through Huntsville and over toward Nashville, we’re looking for significant delays through the Tuesday travel holiday."

Along with storms in Atlanta, showers are also expected in New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., three of the nation’s busiest airline hubs — which could create ripple effects across the national flight network.

Locally, Georgia is under a Level 1 severe weather risk for Tuesday afternoon.

"It wouldn’t surprise me if when we wake up tomorrow morning, maybe that Level 2 risk in Alabama creeps into parts of west Georgia," Forbes said. "The evening round has the better chance of seeing a stronger storm or two."

Once the storms move out late Tuesday night, conditions will turn breezy and cooler.

Cooler, breezy after storms move out

"Wednesday is going to be windy — not as cool as it’s going to get just yet — but by the time you’re waking up on Thanksgiving morning, hello 30s," Forbes said.

Thanksgiving Day will be cool and clear, with highs in the mid-50s, followed by another blast of cold air later in the week. By Friday, highs will struggle to reach 49 degrees, with light rain chances returning Sunday and Monday.

North Georgia forecast: Frigid morning gives way to gradual warm-up

After a frigid start to the week, North Georgia is waking up to another bitterly cold morning — but a warm-up is finally on the horizon.

Tuesday weather for metro Atlanta

"But where we’re left now, it’s dry and clear, but it’s colder than it was yesterday," said FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Joanne Feldman. "Temperatures just steadily dropped throughout the day on Monday. Now, that’s leaving us with widespread 20s and, at warmest, a few spots that are right at 30 degrees."

Feldman noted that while winds aren’t as strong as Monday’s, they’re still enough to make it feel even colder.

"There is a little bit of a breeze," she said. "It’s enough to have an impact for some of you — especially that 18-degree wind chill you’re currently pulling there in Canton."

North Georgia snow turns into sun

A weak disturbance that brought light snow flurries to the North Georgia mountains Monday has moved out, setting up a much quieter stretch of weather. Feldman cautioned that lingering moisture could cause slick spots early in the day:

"Anything that got wet could be icy, of course, since so many temperatures have spent so many hours below freezing."

FOX 5 drove around metro Atlanta and North Georgia checking the road conditions on Tuesday. It took 120 miles worth of driving to find any snow laying on the road. So anyone in the metro should be fine.

With sunshine and calmer winds, highs today will reach near 49 degrees — a small improvement from Monday’s "technical" high of 45.

"That 45-degree high temperature for yesterday actually happened shortly after midnight," Feldman explained. "Yesterday afternoon was not in the 40s — it was still dropping through the 30s instead."

Metro Atlanta warming up

By Wednesday, temperatures will rebound quickly, climbing back to near the average high of 66 degrees.

"It’s going to take some time to bring these temperatures back above freezing, but our freeze warning ends at 10 a.m.," Feldman said. "By tomorrow, we could get all the way up to that average high of 66."

The FOX 5 Storm Team forecast shows the warming trend continuing into the weekend, with highs returning to the 70s and only a low chance of rain Sunday and Monday.

Storms turn to cold air this weekend in North Georgia

It’s time to bundle up, Georgia — a true taste of winter is on the way.

"This weekend, folks need to get prepared," said FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Greg Majewski. "This is a truly winter air mass coming at us."

After a mild Friday and Saturday with highs in the 60s and 70s, a powerful cold front will sweep across the state Sunday, dropping temperatures sharply and bringing the coldest air so far this season.

GET THE LATEST FORECAST

"Check the car batteries. If it’s been slow starting, you may want to swap it out this weekend," Majewski said. "Check your heating systems and make sure they’re ready to go, because you’re going to be needing that heat — definitely starting late on Sunday and carrying you right through Wednesday morning."

Saturday and Sunday will feature mild afternoons — around 64° in Atlanta and 70s across much of the Southeast — but that warmth won’t last. As the front arrives Sunday, winds will increase to around 20 mph, setting the stage for a big chill.

Coldest air in Georgia since February

"Going into Monday, the real cold stuff settles in," Majewski explained. "Not only are we going to have temperatures struggling to be in the 30s — there will be parts of North Georgia that will not get out of the 30s. It’s going to be brutally cold with the wind chills."

A freeze watch is already in effect for Monday morning, with temperatures expected to drop into the 20s and 30s across much of north and central Georgia. Wind chills could make it feel even colder, especially in the mountains, where snow flurries or light snow showers may develop early Monday.

MORE: Atlanta's first freeze: Your questions answered

"There’s even a chance of some scattered snow flurries across northeast Georgia — that’s going to be my snow chase day," Majewski said with a laugh.

Highs Monday will only reach the low 40s, and lows will bottom out in the 20s by Tuesday morning. By Veterans Day, temperatures will rebound slightly into the 50s before climbing back into the upper 60s late next week.

Prepare now for fall freeze

With weekend rain and the first hard freeze of the season on the horizon, Georgians are urged to prepare now rather than wait until temperatures plunge. Here’s how to get ready:

Keep pipes from freezing

Protect pets and livestock

Check your heating system

Plan ahead for outdoor events and community safety

To read more in-depth advice, read our article on these steps and more.

Metro Atlanta Halloween forecast: Sunny skies, cool trick-or-treating temperatures

After a week of clouds and rain, sunshine is finally back just in time for Halloween across north Georgia.

"At least we’re back to a day that will be sunny — because it’s been a long time coming," said FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Joanne Feldman. "With a clear sky this morning, it already feels a little different."

Morning temperatures started in the 40s, dipping to 39 degrees in Blue Ridge, and Feldman says Friday’s warm-up will be the biggest of the week. "We’ll climb into the low 60s this afternoon with a cool breeze and clear skies," she said.

Those heading out for trick-or-treating can expect temperatures in the 50s — crisp but comfortable under a clear evening sky. After sunset, however, the chill will return quickly. "Temperatures plummet fast tonight," Feldman warned. "It’ll get cold enough between about 2 a.m. and 10 a.m. Saturday for a frost advisory to be necessary."

Looking ahead, the weekend starts sunny and cool, but chances of rain return later in the weekend as another system approaches from the west.

More rain Wednesday before a cool, dry Halloween weekend

After a stretch of gray skies and drizzle, another round of beneficial rain is moving through North Georgia Wednesday, but it won’t be as heavy as what we saw earlier in the week.

Wednesday metro Atlanta forecast

Scattered showers will increase through the morning and into midday, spreading from west to east across north and central Georgia. Areas near the Alabama line — including Carroll, Haralson, and Heard counties — will see the steadiest rain before it shifts east later this afternoon.

"This time around, we’re looking at a quarter to a half inch of rain for most spots," Feldman said. "Even in areas that look dry on radar, it’s still gloomy enough for drizzle and mist."

Winds will pick up again today, gusting 25 to 30 miles per hour, keeping it feeling cool and damp. Afternoon highs will hold in the 50s and low 60s under thick cloud cover.

Halloween weekend forecast for metro Atlanta

The forecast turns drier Thursday with only a few lingering clouds, followed by a bright, chilly Halloween. "It’s going to feel like fall, finally," Feldman said. "Cooler overnights, milder afternoons, and a quiet, dry weekend ahead."

Metro Atlanta Tuesday weather: Clouds and drizzle Tuesday, rain Wednesday

After a gloomy start to the week, North Georgia is still stuck under thick cloud cover Tuesday — but brighter days are on the horizon.

"There’s a lot of low, thick cloud cover that’s going to make this day look and feel gloomy regardless," said FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Joanne Feldman. "Most of the measurable rain is now offshore, but we’ll still have some sprinkles and drizzle, especially east of Atlanta."

Temperatures will stay cool again today, holding in the 50s for most of the afternoon. The clouds will keep things gray and breezy through tonight as another weak system approaches before sunrise Wednesday. "We’ll see scattered showers develop tomorrow morning and continue into the afternoon," Feldman said.

After midweek rain, sunshine returns just in time for Halloween and the weekend ahead. "Trick-or-treaters will be just fine," Feldman said. "It’ll be a chilly evening with temperatures in the 50s, and we’ll finish the week with sunshine and cooler-than-average highs in the 60s."

The first weekend of November looks quiet and pleasant — a classic fall stretch for north Georgia.

Soaking rain, winds make Monday commute difficult across metro Atlanta

A soaking rain made for a messy Monday morning commute across North Georgia.

Rainy Monday across North Georgia

As of 7 a.m., about an inch of rain was recorded in Atlanta. The FOX 5 Storm Team said they expected that number to rise as the day — and week — continues. So far, no flood watches or warnings have been issued in the area, but ponding is possible.

The last time North Georgia recorded more than an inch of rain was Aug. 19, according to FOX 5 Storm Team meteorologist Joanne Feldman.

The good news: The steadiest showers will taper off by midday, with only spotty drizzle lingering through the afternoon.

Monday morning commute issues in metro Atlanta

Commuters saw effects from the rain throughout their drive Monday morning.

FOX 5’s Kaitlyn Pratt reported multiple roadway issues, including a fallen tree on Hugh Howell Road near Rosser Road in DeKalb County. Pratt said cars and school buses were driving around the tree, but it was causing delays.

Multiple crashes were also reported on interstates, state routes and highways across most of the area.

Even where no crashes were reported, slow-moving traffic was noted on the Georgia Department of Transportation’s website.

Rain, wind stick around through mid-week

After a soggy start to the week, the clouds and cool temperatures aren’t going anywhere just yet. Off-and-on rain will continue through the day, paired with gusty east winds and highs only in the 50s.

"It’s going to be a cool and breezy rain off and on throughout today," said Feldman. "We don’t have big storms here, just rainfall that’s going to be inconvenient for the morning rush."

While the steadiest rain will taper off later this afternoon, skies will stay overcast and winds will remain gusty — especially north and east of Atlanta, where gusts could top 30 miles per hour. "Even when it’s not raining, it’s not going to look too pretty," Feldman said. "Those breezy east winds will keep it cloudy and keep temperatures in the 50s."

More rain returns midweek, with another system expected to move in on Wednesday before clearing out Thursday. After that, Halloween looks dry but chilly, with highs near 60 and nighttime lows dipping into the 30s and 40s.

"We’ll gradually break out of this pattern by Thursday," Feldman added. "That leaves us in good shape for Halloween — just a cooler-than-average one."

Henry County firefighter’s goes viral for 'Joke of the Day' videos

Henry County firefighter Chad Pollard’s “Joke of the Day" videos have gone viral worldwide.

A Henry County firefighter known for saving lives is now earning global praise for something else — making people laugh.

Firefighter and EMT Chad Pollard Sr. has become a viral sensation thanks to his lighthearted "Joke of the Day" videos shared on Facebook and Instagram, where he mixes dad humor with everyday positivity.

Pollard’s clips, often filmed between emergency calls at Fire Station 10, have racked up tens of millions of views, including one seen more than 7 million times. Viewers from as far away as Australia have written to say his jokes helped lift their spirits during difficult times.

Fellow firefighters say Pollard’s humor is no act — he’s always spreading laughter, both on and off the clock. Pollard says sharing smiles has become part of his purpose. "As long as I know I helped somebody, I’m okay," he told FOX 5.

Friday metro Atlanta weather: Fall weekend ahead for North Georgia

It’s a cool and comfortable start to Friday as metro Atlanta heads into what’s shaping up to be a beautiful fall weekend, according to FOX 5 Meteorologist Joanne Feldman.

Fall weather in metro Atlanta

"Our Friday morning here before we’re moving into a really nice fall weekend," Feldman said. "Although there might be one thing we have to watch by the end of the weekend — a little change in our forecast."

Afternoon highs will reach the upper 70s, nearly average for early October, with breezy east to northeast winds. Feldman said Friday’s weather will feel "almost identical to yesterday," with a mix of sunshine and a few clouds but little to no chance of rain.

Saturday looks pleasant all around with sunshine, cool mornings, and mild afternoons.

Slight rain chance on Sunday in Atlanta

The $1 million question, Feldman said, is whether any rain will move in on Sunday. A developing coastal storm is expected to stay mainly to the east, but some moisture could swing inland late in the day.

"We’ve been talking about a developing coastal storm, which is still expected to leave the bulk of the rain way out to our east and closer to the coast," she explained. "But we might see some of that swinging in from the east Sunday afternoon. Some of you may experience some rain for part of your Sunday — not everyone will."

Feldman said areas east of Atlanta have a slightly better chance of seeing light rain, while areas west of the city are likely to stay completely dry.

After the weekend, next week looks warm, dry, and comfortable, with morning lows in the 50s and afternoon highs in the low 80s each day.

"It’s really nice fall weather ahead," Feldman said.

Thursday metro Atlanta weather: Cooler air moving into area

Cooler and breezier weather is moving into North Georgia as a cold front ushers in drier air ahead of what’s shaping up to be a beautiful fall weekend, according to FOX 5 Meteorologist Joanne Feldman.

"Over the next 24 hours, those 50s you see in the North Georgia mountains will be replaced with 40s, and the 50s will be pushed farther south," Feldman said.

As of early morning, temperatures ranged from 60 to 69 degrees across much of the viewing area, with some clouds returning after clearing out overnight. In Atlanta, it was 69 degrees with a 62-degree dew point and winds around 7 miles per hour — a sign that humidity is beginning to drop.

North Georgia weather: Breezy and cooler weekend ahead

Feldman said wind gusts are already picking up across the region, with Athens reporting gusts up to 26 mph early Thursday. "By sunrise, most of us will feel a breezy day that will continue through the afternoon and even into tomorrow," she said.

Those winds are the key ingredient bringing in the cooler, drier air. Despite starting the day in the 60s, temperatures will not climb anywhere near the upper 80s seen on Tuesday.

"It’s a little deceptive," Feldman explained. "You’d assume we could warm up close to 80, but we won’t even get close. By noon, we’ll have mostly cloudy skies — maybe a sprinkle where clouds are thickest — but we’ll mix in some sunshine too and end the day in the upper 60s and low 70s."

Fall returns to North Georgia before a slight warm-up

By Friday morning, much cooler air will settle in, with widespread 50s expected across North Georgia. The breeze will remain, but skies will clear, leading to another mild and comfortable afternoon with highs in the 60s and 70s.

"Saturday just looks really pleasant all the way around — a crisp, cool start, some clouds off to the east, and rain staying even farther east," Feldman said. "There’s not a good chance of rain in this forecast — that’s the downside. But the upside is it’s a beautiful fall weekend."

Next week, temperatures are expected to warm slightly, with afternoon highs climbing back into the 70s and low 80s under mostly sunny skies.

Wednesday metro Atlanta weather: Rain moves out, cooler mornings coming

The FOX 5 Storm Team says a cold front moving through North Georgia Wednesday will bring a noticeable drop in temperatures, breezy conditions, and a taste of fall heading into the weekend.

"This is what’s going to at least jumpstart the change," said FOX 5 Meteorologist Joanne Feldman. "The cold front coming through this morning is producing a few showers across the north metro, but by this afternoon, most of us will see sunshine and much warmer conditions."

Scattered showers are possible early in the day across north and middle Georgia, especially near Macon, but many areas — including metro Atlanta — will dry out by afternoon. Highs will climb to around 84 degrees, unusually warm for early October.

By Thursday, cooler air will move in behind the front, dropping temperatures nearly 15 degrees. Atlanta’s high will fall to around 70, with breezy winds gusting up to 25 mph.

"Tomorrow’s going to be a very breezy day with plenty of cloud cover and limited sunshine," Feldman said. "While we can’t rule out a stray shower, what we’re getting this morning is really our best shot at rain — and even that isn’t doing much to ease the rainfall deficit."

Morning temperatures will turn crisp heading into the weekend, dipping into the 50s across much of north Georgia. Afternoon highs will hover in the mid to upper 70s, with sunny skies and dry air dominating through Saturday and Sunday.

Feldman said the weekend will offer classic fall weather for outdoor plans. "It’ll be dry but beautiful — 50s for lows, 70s for highs, and plenty of sunshine," he said.

Metro Atlanta Weather: Pleasant weekend ahead with mild temps, spotty rain

Atlanta is heading into a comfortable final weekend of September with milder temperatures after record-tying heat earlier this week.

Atlanta is heading into a comfortable final weekend of September with milder temperatures after record-tying heat earlier this week.

Highs will settle in the mid-80s on Saturday and Sunday — warm, but typical for this time of year. Rain chances will be lower than Friday, though a stray shower or thunderstorm can’t be ruled out during the afternoon. By Sunday, skies should turn mostly sunny with little to no rain expected.

Meteorologists continue to monitor the tropics for possible impacts next week. Early forecast models suggest Georgia may only see breezy conditions and light showers, while heavier rainfall is expected farther east in the Carolinas.

Recent showers have provided some relief to dry conditions, but drought continues to expand across parts of the state. Rain totals will remain uneven, with some spots seeing more than an inch while others get nothing at all.

🌤️ 5-Day Forecast

Friday: ⛅ Highs upper 70s–low 80s; scattered afternoon showers
Saturday: 🌦️ Mid-80s; warm with isolated showers/thundershowers
Sunday: ☀️ Mid-80s; mostly sunny, dry and pleasant
Monday: 🌤️ Highs near 84°; 20% chance of showers
Tuesday–Thursday: 🌤️ Mid-80s; light breezes, 20% chance of spotty rain each day

Metro Atlanta Weather: Rain expected Thursday; tropical wave moving west

A slow-moving cold front is bringing steady rain and scattered thunderstorms across North Georgia on Thursday.

A slow-moving cold front is bringing steady rain and scattered thunderstorms across North Georgia on Thursday, with heavier downpours moving through Pickens and Dawson counties early in the morning and rain chances expected to increase around metro Atlanta by the afternoon.

The system will keep conditions cloudy and damp, with highs holding near 70 for much of the day and only briefly reaching the low 80s. While some relief is expected overnight, scattered showers could return Friday before tapering off into the weekend. Rainfall will be welcome in drought-stricken parts of the state.

🌦️ North Georgia Forecast

🌧️ Thursday: Widespread rain and scattered storms, heaviest in Pickens and Dawson counties this morning. Highs near 70, briefly reaching low 80s.

⚡ Afternoon: Rain chances increase in metro Atlanta. Expect downpours with occasional lightning.

🌙 Overnight: Brief lull, but scattered showers may return.

🌧️ Friday: Not a washout, but lingering scattered showers and storms. Rainfall helpful for easing drought conditions.

🌥️ Saturday: Fewer showers, rain chances decreasing.

☀️ Sunday: Dry skies return. Highs steady in the low 80s.

📅 Next Week: Small chance of rain early in the week; highs stay in the low 80s.

By Sunday, drier skies are expected to return, with highs in the low 80s likely to remain steady through next week.

Watching the Tropics

A tropical wave, known as Invest-AL94 - soon to be named Imelda - is moving west at about 15 mph and is already kicking up showers and thunderstorms across parts of the Caribbean.

There are signs that a low pressure area could be forming near eastern Hispaniola. That’s important, because once a system starts to consolidate, it can organize and strengthen more quickly.

Forecast models are hinting that this disturbance may grow into a broad low over Hispaniola and the southern Bahamas later today or Friday.

The National Hurricane Center says a tropical depression is likely to form near the Bahamas by the end of the week.

It’s too early to nail down exact details for the U.S., but coastal Georgia and the Carolinas should be keeping an eye on this system. Even if it doesn’t become a strong storm, it could bring rounds of rain, choppy seas, and breezy conditions early next week.

Metro Atlanta Weather: Fall arrives, but Atlanta still stuck in summer heat

First full day of fall brings a forecast high of 90 degrees in Atlanta, about five degrees above average.

The first full day of fall is bringing anything but sweater weather to North Georgia – residents should brace for more summer-like heat before relief arrives later this week.

Temperatures started Tuesday morning in the 60s across the region — 62 degrees in Blairsville, 63 in Athens, mid-60s in Griffin and upper 60s in Atlanta and Rome. Carrollton was among the coolest spots. Despite the comfortable start, the day is expected to heat quickly under high pressure that has kept rain away for weeks.

Atlanta has recorded only two-hundredths of an inch of rain this month, leaving the city more than three inches below average rainfall for the year.

Tuesday’s forecast high is 90 degrees, five degrees warmer than normal for late September. Last year on this date, Atlanta set a record high of 96. A stray shower may pop up Tuesday afternoon, but widespread rainfall is unlikely.

🌤️ 5-Day Forecast

Tuesday: ☀️ Hot, high near 90; slim chance of isolated shower.

Wednesday: 🌤️ Low 70s in the morning, high near 91; slight storm chance late.

Thursday: ⛈️ Storms possible, some severe; high 85, cooler air moving in.

Friday: 🌦️ Showers early, clearing later; high near 79.

Saturday: 🍂 Pleasant and cooler; highs upper 70s, lows in the low 60s.

By Wednesday night and Thursday, the approaching cold front could finally trigger stronger storms, including a few severe cells capable of producing heavy rain. Behind the front, temperatures are expected to drop by about 10 degrees, bringing the area back to more typical fall conditions with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the 60s heading into the weekend.

Fall officially begins Monday afternoon, but metro Atlanta will feel more like summer for the next couple of days with highs soaring into the upper 80s and possibly reaching 90 degrees by Tuesday.

The average high for late September has dropped to 82, and temperatures will trend closer to that by the second half of the week. A stronger cold front is expected to bring the best chance of widespread rain on Thursday, helping drought-stricken areas west and north of Atlanta.

Computer models suggest parts of northwest Georgia could pick up 1 to 2 inches of rain over the next several days, which would be especially beneficial in areas where drought conditions have developed.

The weekend looks seasonable, with mild temperatures and only scattered, hit-or-miss showers.

📅 7-Day Forecast

🌞 Monday: Mostly sunny, high 88, dry
🔥 Tuesday: Hot and sunny, high 90
🌤 Wednesday: Partly cloudy, slight rain chance late, high 87
🌧 Thursday: Best chance of rain (60%) with cold front, high 82
🌦 Friday: Partly sunny, 30% chance showers, high 80
🌤 Saturday: Mostly pleasant, small 20% chance rain, high 79
🌤 Sunday: Partly sunny, 20% chance isolated showers, high 78
