Rockdale County deputy killed while directing traffic

The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of their deputies who was hit by a vehicle and killed while on duty.

Authorizes say the deadly crash happened at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Highway 138 and Highway 212.

According to officials, Jenkins was directing traffic when he was hit by a vehicle.

Medics rushed Jenkins to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Officials say the driver remained on the scene until deputies arrived.

The Georgia State Patrol is handling the crash investigation.

Before joining the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, Jenkins spent decades with the College Park Police Department working in patrol, investigation, Spec Ops., and traffic enforcement.

"Walter always seemed to find his way back to working traffic and patrolling on a motorcycle. Walter enjoyed cutting up with co-workers and sharing the positives in life," a spokesperson for the College Park Police Department said in a statement, "Even though Walter had retired from College Park and was working with Rockdale Co. Sheriff’s Dept., he will always be part of the College Park family."

Officials are asking Georgians to keep Jenkins's family and the deputies of the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office in your prayers.
