Police: 3rd officer-involved shooting along Candler Road in last 45 days

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to look an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night in DeKalb County. This would be the third officer-involved shooting within the same one-mile radius on Candler Road within the last 45 days.

It happened near Candler Road and Misty Waters Drive around 8:30 p.m. DeKalb County Police said officers pulled over a gray BMW which had pulled into Chevron gas station. When officer approached, one of the occupants ran off.

"They stopped the vehicle here on Candler Road at the Chevron gas station. During the traffic stop, one of the occupants of the vehicle got out and fled behind the rear of the location and jumped a fence. The officer was pursuing that occupant on foot and the subject fired at least one round at the police officer, police officer returned fire striking the subject several times," said Chief James Conroy, DeKalb County Police Department.

The suspect was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition. Police did not immediately release the subject’s name.

At least two other people were taken into custody. Details surrounding those individuals including their names have not yet been released.

This is the third officer-involved shooting along this stretch of Candler Road within the past 45 days.

During the evening of Jan. 7, an off-duty Clarkston Police officer working security at the Red Lobster tried to stop four men who appeared to be breaking into cars, according to the GBI and ended up in a gun battle with four suspects. The shooting killed one suspect and wounded two more. No officers were injured during that incident.

On Dec. 13, 2018, 24-year-old DeKalb County Police Officer Edgar Isidro Flores was gunned down during a traffic stop. K-9 Officer Indi was also shot in the pursuit of the gunman but has since recovered albeit losing an eye. The GBI said the suspect in that incident was shot and killed when pursuing officers returned fire.
